Keep British jobs for British graduates! Ministers to impose controls on foreign students
Ministers pledged yesterday to deliver British jobs for British graduates. One in five young people is unable to find a job in the worst labour market on record for under-25s. Yet graduates have to compete against 40,000 non-EU students who finish their courses at the same time. Damian Green is planning to axe this post-study route which allows the foreigners to spend two years looking for work. Echoing the last government’s pledge to deliver British jobs for British workers, the immigration minister said: ‘It’s quite important that we have a proper fair playing field for British graduates in the jobs market.’Universities, which are hugely dependent on tuition fees from overseas, savaged the plans. But Mr Green said he wanted to slash the numbers of student visas issued each year. He will make it far harder for non-EU nationals to attend private colleges offering non-degree courses.
