Orgasmic wins 2011 IPPY Gold Award for Erotica

Yay! I just got the news that my anthology Orgasmic: Erotica for Women will be awarded the GOLD IPPY (Independent Publisher) Award. This makes my sixth and I love that these awards highlight independent publishing. I would also personally love to see this book do so well I get to do another book all about orgasms because it's one of my most varied books and I love that about it! So congratulations to all the authors in Orgasmic and if you haven't checked out this book yet, more info is below. I also liked the challenge of writing in a way that almost fetishizes whatever it is that gives each character an orgasm, not in a way that negates that fetish, obviously, but in a way that brings it to life. None of the stories read as cliches of what gets someone off.

What gets you off? How do you like to come? Let Orgasmic count the ways…with 25 stories centered around female orgasm, there’s something here for every reader. The women in Orgasmic climax from Tantric sex, role-playing, piercing, G-spot play, sex toys, horseback riding, BDSM, a belt and even chemistry–the scientific kind. They delight in food, God and handymen. They create their own objects of pleasure; they spy, tease, obey, command, argue, submit. Some are shy about their orgasms and some are bold as can be. They come, and come and come again, and they do it in some of the hottest, most creative ways you can think of. Featuring red-hot erotica by some of today’s hottest writers, these stories will make you want to stop everything and have an orgasm immediately…once you’ve turned the last succulent page.

Introduction

Let Me Count The Ways…

Orgasm: like sex, it’s one word that means many different things to many different people. For many women, it’s the center of their sexual life, a daily occurrence; something to look forward to, experiment with. For
some it means a gushing rush of pleasure, for others it’s a little wave they delight in cresting.

Every woman who orgasms may describe it differently.

Yet there are many women, myself included, who find orgasm not so easy to achieve much of the time (yes, it’s trueæI love sex, and get turned on, but coming is a bit more complex for me). In “Hurdles,” Rowan Elizabeth writes of such a character: “I can’t win this. And it’s my hang-up, too. I feel like there’s something I’m just not doing right. Maybe if I tighten my legs a little more or squeeze my eyes shut harder, then we’d get there together.”

Merriam-Webster’s Dictionary defines orgasm as “intense or paroxysmal excitement; especially: an explosive discharge of neuromuscular tensions at the height of sexual arousal that is usually accompanied by the ejaculation of semen in the male and by vaginal contractions in the female.” It comes from the Latin and Greek (orgasmus/orgasmos), from organ “to grow ripe, be lustful.” I like that description, though what it leaves out is that for women, orgasm can stretch beyond the boundaries of ejaculation, can continue on and on, can be drawn out for as long as the woman (or her partner) wants to indulge in the experience.

In Lolita Lopez’s perfectly kinky story, “The Chair,” sex toys and submission go hand in hand with orgasm for the protagonist. “Lily’s orgasms changed from separate events to one long and unending oscillation of bliss.” Her “punishment” at the hands of Cal is one she’s very, very happy to absorb.

There are countless articles and books telling you how to have a bigger, better orgasm. I don’t want to add to the clamor of the voices saying, You must orgasm now. Instead, I want Orgasmic to be a fictional showcase of some of the reasons, methods and delights women bring to their orgasms. I want these red-hot stories to help get you warmed up, primed, aroused. I want them to make you squirm with desire, identification, curiosity. I want you to read these stories aloud to a lover…or someone you wish were your lover.

I did my best to capture an array of big (and little) Os, moments where the world feels like it’s exploding in your body, orgasms that rock more than just your world. These stories capture the ferocity, intensity and power of women’s orgasms, however they’re achieved. I couldn’t include every way women come in this book, or it would be much longer than it is now, but I wanted to include a varied look at what gets women off, which means it’s not always a man or another woman, or even a machine that does the trick. Vanessa Vaughn taps into a classic route with “Taking the Reins:”

As I straddle the seat and slowly lower myself down, I feel a familiar tingle of excitement deep inside. I can sense the monstrous size of the body between my thighs, the large chest expanding and contracting broadly with each breath. The smell of fresh, conditioned leather smothers my sensesæwell, that, and also the slight musky tinge of sweat. It is a raw smell mixed with rich, dark dirt.

Speaking of orgasm how-tos, in “The Big O” by Donna George Storey, she both skewers the omnipresent women’s magazine sex advice and adds a saucy twist as her protagonist puts into practice “The Sexercise Prescription: A Stronger Secret You in Six Weeks.”

The women in Orgasmic climax from tantric sex, role-playing, piercing, G-spot play, sex toys and even chemistry--the scientific kind. They delight in food, God and handymen. They create their own objects of pleasure; they spy, tease, obey, command, argue, submit. Some are shy about their orgasms and some are bold as can be.

They come, and come and come again, and they do it in some of the hottest, most creative ways you can think of. Visit me at orgasmicbook.wordpress.com if you just can’t get enough…orgasms, that is.

2 videos from my California readings: Orgasmic mashup and "Manners" at Coco de Mer

I just got emails about these lovely readings - big thanks to Bianca Butler and Dave Naz, respectively, for taping us!

Roundup of the reading at Booksmith in San Francisco featuring me, Violet Blue, Susie Hara, Dusty Horn and Donna George Storey - if you want to watch the whole thing, click here from The Campanil at Mills College. Violet Blue read from "The Fugly Ducky" by Thomas Roche, and I read from "Espionage" from Best Women's Erotica 2011, though you have to check the Booksmith link for that, in full. There was a LOT of humor at this reading, as you can tell from this clip above.

Orgasmic: Erotica for Women

Rachel Kramer Bussel reads Manners from Dave Naz on Vimeo.

Dave Naz taped me reading my kinky face-slapping story "Manners" from Gotta Have It - click that link for details on 68 more hot stories! Did I say that 5 members of my family were in attendance? I so almost read something else (and opened the evening with a personal favorite, that I also read at Good Vibes, the last story, "Vacation Pictures" by Robert Peregrine, which I look forward to reading at Bluestockings on Valentine's Day, it's so humorously hot).

I'm hoping to do a reading in Seattle the weekend of June 25-26 - alas, there are no Seattle contributors to Gotta Have It but I have something up my sleeve. And I'm working on (fingers crossed) trying to do a Midwest tour of Milwaukee, Minneapolis and Chicago when it's warmer - maybe even Madison if a venue will have me. Will keep you posted!

Tuesday, January 25, 2011

West Coast book tour is this week: Berkeley, San Francisco, Los Angeles! All free, all with free cupcakes, and hot, hot stories.

I'll be doing a separate post about my 3 New York City events in February, but as a reminder, unless I'm already traveling or have a special occasion like a panel, this is my last year of doing a bazillion outside readings. I just can't pretend like I can afford them or that I'm rich, and it doesn't make financial sense to be running all over the country when I could be working smarter, better and trying to sell more books. So my point is: come see me in Berkeley, San Francisco and Los Angeles now! I'm hoping to get to a few other cities like Denver, Minneapolis and Milwaukee in 2011 as well, fingers crossed.

A reminder with Facebook links - I'd really love it if you'd spread the word. All these events are free, it's a chance to get the just-released Gotta Have It signed by me and contributors (Denise Hoffner, who wrote census taker erotica story "Concensus" in Gotta Have It, has been added to Thursday's Berkeley Good Vibrations reading) and I'm getting fabulous, unique cupcakes, different ones from different local bakers, for each event.

Saturday night I will also make my third appearance on The Dr. Susan Block Show - listen online! Saturday night, January 29th, 10:30 pm to midnight, PST, I'll be on with Shameless author Pamela Madsen - my interview with her will be up soon at SexIs Magazine.

You've gotta have Gotta Have It: 69 Stories of Sudden Sex

I'm so excited about my biggest (338 pages) book ever, Gotta Have It: 69 Stories of Sudden Sex, which will be in stores any day now, from Cleis Press. I'm working on postcards, readings, an author-filled book trailer and much more. Mostly I love it because I got to work with tons of new authors, it's totally varied, from crossword puzzles to Godzilla, quickies to kink. The format of 1,200 words or less allowed me to play with the form and include a wide array of stories so there's something for everyone and the smaller trim size means it can fit in your coat pocket probably. And there's a cat on the cover and a photo on the spine!

The first 10 people to send me their receipts for the book will get a choice of (while supplies last) a free copy of Orgasmic or the new Jo Weldon-foreword-including Hide & Seek. Write me at gottahaveitbook at gmail.com with "Receipt" in the subject line! Readings are in the works for New York, LA and Minneapolis and hopefully I can squeeze in a few others too.

Introduction: Short, Sweet and Totally Sexy

Everyone needs a break from his or her everyday life sometimes, and what better way to escape than with a short story that gets right to the point? The authors of the sixty-nine stories you hold in your hand understand exactly how to pique your interest and get you off , and they do it all in 1,200 words or less. You don’t need long to get drawn into the drama, tension and lust.

I received close to three hundred submissions for this collection, more than I ever have before, and I think that’s because no one, writer or reader alike, can resist a short story that seduces instantaneously. These stories aren’t all about quickie sex, though there’s plenty of that. There are strangers who meet and know right away they must have each other, neighbors, travel mates, coworkers and long-term couples such as those in “After Ten Years” and “Remembering the Wrinkles” who are looking for ways to hold on to that spark. There are stories of sex in libraries, vacation sex and lots of outdoor sex—in the rain, in the street, all over. There are lovers with pecan rolls dripping in caramel, and meals where lovers feast on nothing but each other. There are even a few stories with no actual sex in them at allæyou’ll have to hunt those down and see why anticipation can be the sexiest act of all.

There’s humor, kink, flirtation, Godzilla, missed connections, sex toys, and one very bold census taker. But I don’t want to take up too much of your time that could be better spent getting intimately acquainted with these short but incredibly sexy stories. I hope you will savor them, read them aloud and return to your favorites again and again. Because all of us have a few minutes set aside for a quickie, don’t we?

Free cupcakes at San Francisco reading with Violet Blue January 28th at Booksmith

To those who were at our last fabulous reading, it was packed, and we signed lots of books and gave out lots of cupcakes. I hope to do so again so pretty please, tell your SF friends about this one. I'll be reading "Espionage" from Best Women's Erotica 2011 (and it'll soon be available for your listening pleasure). Plus I get to host Dusty Horn (who Violet introduced me to at Litquake in 2009!), Susie Hara and Donna George Storey, both of whom I met via working with Susie Bright. See you at Booksmith! (And Donna George Storey and I also read the night before, January 27th, at Good Vibrations in Berkeley.)

Free erotica anthology from me for first 10 to purchase Gotta Have It

I got some fabulous news yesterday from my publisher Cleis Press - my biggest book yet, Gotta Have It: 69 Stories of Sudden Sex, aka, the erotica book with the cat on the cover, is shipping to me from the printer today, rather than in a month. So, to celebrate, I'm offering the first 10 of you to buy it a free copy of either Orgasmic or the newly rereleased version of Hide & Seek with an foreword by the one and only burlesque performer Jo Weldon.

Just email your receipt to me at gottahaveitbook at gmail.com with "Receipt" in the subject line and your mailing address. US only. Purchase it from anywhere but the first 10 with their receipts get the freebies. Kindle users, the Kindle edition will be out February 1st .

Stay tuned for Gotta Have It readings and postcards and podcasts and lots of fun stuff. This was a very fun but very challenging project to work on due to the sheer number of submissions and contributors. Big thanks to my amazing assistant Inara de Luna, who I highly recommend, for her help organizing things. I hope this does well in part because I want to do it again, and in part because I am excited to have the chance to publish so many new, and new to me, authors. Publishing someone's first erotica story? Totally makes my day/year. Also, I think this one has a very wide appeal; there's a little bit of everything, from Godzilla to crossword puzzles to long-term relationships to flirtations to libraries and missed connections to kink to the mile high club and more. Lots more.

Gotta Have It: 69 Stories of Sudden Sex is edited by Rachel Kramer Bussel, and will be published by Cleis Press in February 2011.

Fresh Fiction reviews Orgasmic

Orgasmic: Erotic Stories for Women (click to read intro and watch book trailer) got a great review at Fresh Fiction:

Orgasmic springs from a delicious idea — a book of erotica that explores every possible type of orgasm. This highly original concept could only have come from the delightfully dirty (and brilliant) mind of Rachel Kramer Bussel. Oral sensations, digital delights, tricks with toys, and the old bump and grind are all featured, along with many more imaginative ways to bring a lover to climax. By taking the reins, one woman finds pleasure on top; an experimental lover discovers ecstasy with a remote-controlled vibrator; body and soul merge in multiple orgasms through tantric sex. Dirty Sexy Books loves Orgasmic, calls it "a glorious experience"

Check out this amazing review of Orgasmic: Erotic Stories for Women from Dirty Sexy Books (do check them out for lots of other excellent reviews). Also remember that you can hear Velvet Moore read from the excellent chemistry sex story "Chemistry" on October 21st, live and free with free cupcakes, at In The Flesh Reading Series. From the review:

It’s Orgasmic indeed. Some of these stories sent me straight to the moon, and then I drifted back down to earth only to take off again on the next page. After I finished this book it occurred to me that I’ve never read anything that focuses so wholly on female satisfaction. I think men tend to steal the limelight since they express arousal and orgasm in such a visual fashion. Women know how to hide it and fake it like pros, and sometimes that works against us, because our bodies are not simple to decipher, and oh! the frustration when we desperately want someone to break our code and read us like a book. That happens in Orgasmic, and it’s a glorious experience.

“Chemistry” by Velvet Moore starts with the line, “The smell of science makes me horny.” After reading about what happens to a hospital administrator in a laboratory, I can certainly understand why. The heroine in “Seeing Stars” by Louisa Harte suffers on a camping trip until she learns that exposing herself in nature can draw forth her primitive side, and every soft breeze or cool drop of rain is a sensory explosion while making love under the stars. Another couple has stealth sex in a public place while watching a lunar eclipse in “Moon Tantra” by Teresa Noelle Roberts.

As hot as I found the outdoor action, I was just as tantalized when things moved inside. ”Making Shapes” by Lily Harlem portrayed a woman who is my kind of artisan, and she makes functional art based on molds of her client’s most intimate parts. Who ever heard of falling in love with a penis at first sight? Well, it happens here. ”Animal Inside” by Neve Black is a voyeur’s dream, with a hole in the wall and two strangers enjoying their separate, yet shared, experiences. In “The London O” by Justine Elyot, a woman teases her lover with tales of past escapades, only to have him top them all with the help of a special pair of knickers.

These were just some of my favorites from this Orgasmic collection. Ladies, enjoy yourselves.
