WINNIPEG — A Winnipeg man has been sentenced to four months in jail after getting caught in an international child pornography investigation.

Mark Perry, 59, pleaded guilty Tuesday to charges of possession and distribution of several graphic images of nude children as young as five years old.

Perry was arrested in early 2010 after Winnipeg police were alerted by Danish authorities that he had been posting a handful of pictures in an online chat room.

Perry's arrest stunned colleagues at the Winnipeg Sun newspaper, where he has worked as an editor for 20 years. He was eventually fired from his job.

"He was vilified in the media. He suffered shame and degradation," defence lawyer Martin Glazer told court on Tuesday. "He's not looking forward to going to jail, but he knows your honour has no other choice."

Recent legislative changes have resulted in mandatory minimum jail sentences for child pornography offences. Perry has no prior criminal record and has been undergoing counselling and therapy since his arrest, said Glazer.

Crown attorney Terry McComb said Perry has been fully co-operative with police in admitting he liked "younger, or young-looking girls." He even provided investigators with passwords to access encrypted parts of his computer files.

Lawyers did not provide an exact number of images seized by police but said there was more legal adult pornography than child pornography found. All of the downloading occurred on his home computer.

Perry was also given three years of supervised probation Tuesday and his name will be placed on the national sex offender registry.

NEWPORT BEACH – A caretaker pleaded guilty and was sentenced Thursday to 13 years in state prison for stealing thousands of dollars from many senior victims to spend on shopping, travel and a "dog whisperer," according to an Orange County District Attorney's Office news release.

Norma Ruth Casini, 51, of Laguna Niguel pleaded guilty to three felony counts of caretaker theft from an elder and one felony count of residential burglary of an occupied home with sentencing enhancements for losses and white collar crime, the release said. Casini took more than $610,000 from one of the victims, an 85-year-old woman.

Casini's daughter and her husband also were convicted and sentenced Thursday in the same case.
Leno Casini, 57, pleaded guilty to one felony counts each of accessory after the fact, receiving stolen property and second-degree burglary. He was sentenced to one year in jail and three years of formal probation.

Anastasia Darlena Mendezkestler, 23, pleaded guilty to a felony count of receiving stolen property. She was sentenced to 93 days in jail, for which she received credit for time served, and three years of formal probation, the release said.

In addition to her 13-year prison term, Norma Casini was ordered to pay $642,000 in restitution and over $1.2 million in fines, according to the release.

Casini used stolen money to pay for her home lease, dog day care and a "dog whisperer," orthodontic work, laser eye treatment, shopping, concerts, travel and other personal items, they said. More victims stepped forward after prosecution began and because of media coverage.

Leno Casini was in possession of and used one of victim's credit cards to purchase Metrolink passes and pay bills, the news release said. He took stolen rings belonging to another victim to a pawn shop in Irvine and sold the wedding set, claiming the rings belonged to his deceased mother, according to prosecutors.

Mendezkestler deposited stolen money she got from her mother into her personal bank accounts, prosecutors said. She used the money to pay for her divorce, medical insurance, dental work, pets, toys, furniture and electronics, they said.
