IPSWICH'S dream to have an NRL team to follow in 2013 is on life support

NRL bid wants to kick off in 2013

IPSWICH'S dream to have an NRL team to follow in 2013 is on life support after expansion plans were dealt a blow by comments from NRL CEO David Gallop.

Gallop sent shockwaves through the seven prospective NRL bids when he said on ABC Radio over the weekend that he thought “we would get to 18 teams by 2015”.

“It might come earlier, but we should be giving our existing clubs a couple of years of new television money to get themselves stable before we introduce new teams into the competition,” Gallop said.

Western Corridor NRL bid chairman Steve Johnson said that the Ipswich bid would prefer a 2013 start and that it would be ready if early expansion was given the green light.

“We can be ready to go tomorrow – subject to getting a football side together,” Johnson said.

“The way our financial model works, the sooner you are on the field the better off you are.

“The 12-month lead-in costs are quite substantial ... so we'd actually prefer a heartbeat lead-in time so we can jump on the field.

“We are disappointed for the Western Corridor if it is going to be delayed because we believe there is a market out there now for a side. But as far as our planning goes it doesn't affect us.

“If expansion comes in 2015 then we will be ready for it.”

Franchises planning to come into the game include Western Corridor, Perth, Wellington, Central Coast, Central Queensland, Brisbane and Papua New Guinea.

Johnson said that if 2014 was the compromise expansion date, the Corridor bid would be ready.

“We have a stadium ready to roll,” he said.

“We have a football club infrastructure.

“We have got our juniors in place. We have got our second-tier clubs in place.

“We are just stepping up one level.

“Whether we start in 2013, 2014 or 2015 – we don't have to reinvent the wheel.”

Motherhood The Musical - Civic Theatre Ipswich

Having a baby is just the beginning...motherhood is for life. Motherhood The Musical is the joyous journey and loving look at the blessings and perils of being a mum at any age. It’s climbing the emotional mountain only to find that there’s laundry at the top. It’s discovering how powerful your love can be and how quickly they grow up. It’s helping them find their way and not losing yours. It’s about laughing and crying, craziness and calm, smiles and tears . . . and all before breakfast.

Three weeks out from the birth of her first child, Amy is thrown a baby shower by her girlfriends — Barb, an over-worked, underpaid, stressed-out mother of five; Brooke, a hardworking lawyer who rarely sees her kids; and Trisha, a single mum who’s struggling to hold things together. Whether it’s dirty nappies and lazy husbands, or the difficult juggle of children and a career, this is a show that doesn’t shy away from ugly facts, but which is also quick to embrace the joys and triumphs of watching your children grow.

The original story, music and lyrics were written by the award-winning singer/songwriter Sue Fabisch. Among the 20 songs are the Top 10 Billboard comedy hit The Kids Are Finally Asleep, the rousing Costco Queen, the show-stopping Grannyland and the tender I’m Danny’s Mom. A feel-good celebration of the hard yakka that transforms a woman into a mum, Motherhood The Musical lays bare the many truths of parenthood: the good, the bad and the laundry.

Metro Hotel Ipswich offers special package for The Prom Song

Metro Hotel Ipswich International is inviting Ipswich locals and visitors to the city to spend the night with them on the first weekend of the Ipswich Festival, when the Ipswich City Orchestra holds their inaugural Prom Song event.

As part of the Ipswich Festival, the Ipswich City Orchestra is presenting The Prom Song on May 21 - an event where the people of Ipswich and visitors to the city are invited to bring a cushion or book a seat as the city's orchestra brings the music of the ages to the Ipswich Civic Hall.

In the tradition of the great Proms of Albert Hall in London but with a true provincial Australian flavour, the orchestra will play everything from the music of Johann Strauss to Waltzing Matilda, with plenty of opportunities for the audience to clap and sing along to their favourite tunes.

Ipswich Festival to Lift Flooded Spirits

THE event-popping Ipswich Festival could become a permanent fixture in May.

Deputy Mayor Victor Attwood made the announcement during the launch of the festival at the Ipswich Civic Centre last Wednesday.

The festival was moved from April to May 18-29 this year after the floods that hit the region in January.

``The new time would be better to take it further away from Easter,’’ he said.

``(The festival) is a great circuit breaker with what we’ve had to put up with.’‘

The floods will remain a focus of the festival with volunteers, SES teams, emergency services and defence personnel being thanked in the street parade on Saturday, May 21.

But the 12-day festival, which will also coincide with Italian Week celebrations, will also focus on the city letting its hair down and moving on.

Riverside fireworks, a circus in the mall, the Prom Song, a street party, global fiesta, the opening of Kids Kingdom at Springfield, art exhibitions, an eisteddfod, a quilt exhibition, horse races, and a jazz, wine and blues show are among the numerous events endeavouring to lift morale and give the city an economic boost.

Ipswich Events Corporation chairman Paul Casos said the festival had attracted 50 sponsors.

``The festival would not be possible without the community embracing it and the community has certainly got behind it,’’ he said.

Ipswich Mayor Paul Pisasale said it’s time to `kick our heals up and celebrate’.

The Workshops Rail Museum wins at the Australian Tourism Awards

Congratulations to The Workshops Rail Museum for taking out the top gong in the heritage and cultural tourism category at the 2011 Australian Tourism Awards.

According to Brisbane Marketing Chief Executive Officer John Aitken, the award was a well deserved recognition for the museum.

“The Workshops Rail Museum is an outstanding attraction for Ipswich and the Greater Brisbane and this award is a credit to the staff and volunteers for their hard workd and dedication,” Mr Aitken said.

Arts Minister and Ipswich Member Rachel Nolan congratulated The Workshops Rail Museum after it took out the coveted award.

“Now the rest of Australia knows what we already did – The Workshops Rail Museum is a winner,” Ms Nolan said.

“It already won national recognition in 2007, taking out the prestigious Best Heritage and Cultural Tourist Experience, and now staff will have to make room on the mantelpiece for another trophy.”

The Ipswich museum beat Fremantle Prison (WA), Venture North (NT), Museum of Australian Democracy (ACT), Old Melbourne Gaol (VIC), Innamincka Hotel (SA), Beaconsfield Mine and Heritage Centre (TAS), and the Temora Aviation Museum (NSW) to take out the award in the heritage and cultural tourism category.

“This award is testament to the dedication of staff and volunteers, as well as those at the adjacent Queensland Rail workshops,” Ms Nolan said.

“Each and every one involved in the museum is a winner.”

The Australian Tourism Awards are the most prestigious tourism event in the country and showcase the wealth of fantastic tourism product Australia has to offer.

“Local, state and national tourism awards are a great tool to help operators improve their business,” Ms Nolan said.

“In these tough economic times, every bit of promotion helps our tourism industry and money cannot buy this sort of publicity for The Workshops Rail Museum.”

Set at the birthplace of rail in Queensland, The Workshops Rail Museum features 15 hands-on exhibitions for visitors to explore.

The exhibits include historic carriages, a model railway, stories about the future of rail, and treasures such as the Vice-Regal carriage and Australia’s oldest working steam locomotive.

Visitors also get to meet some true Aussie characters when they step into a real heritage railway workshop and see it in operation.

The Workshops Rail Museum is part of the Queensland Museum. For more information visit www.theworkshops.qm.qld.gov.au or call 07 3432 5100.

Brisbane's Backyard - Beautiful Ipswich

Brisbane's beautiful backyard, which includes the Scenic Rim, Country Valleys and Ipswich, is the focus of a campaign run by Brisbane Marketing designed to attract visitors to the region.

The campaign features hotels, B&Bs and retreats in the region - a leisurely one hour drive west of Brisbane- offering great accommodation deals until March 28.

Brisbane Marketing Leisure Tourism Director Cathie McBean said the depth and breadth of tourism products and experiences in the Scenic Rim, Country Valleys and Ipswich regions are perfect for people to explore over the Easter long weekend break.

"This campaign is timely, while only two months since the floods it is important we send out a very clear message - the Scenic Rim, Country Valleys and Ipswich- Brisbane's beautiful backyard- is open and ready for families and visitors to enjoy," she said.

"We want to educate people in Brisbane about the amazing country experiences to be had right on their doorstep.

"In the Ipswich region people can explore historical landmarks like the Ipswich Heritage Trail, or the award-winning Workshops Rail Museum; or adrenalin lovers can get their fill with skydiving, hot air ballooning or driving a V8 Supercar at the Queensland Raceway.

Prince William Expected to Visit Lockyer

IT IS expected Prince William will tour the worst-hit parts of the flood-devastated Lockyer Valley when he visits Australia this month.

The Prince will visit Australia and New Zealand to meet with residents affected by the summer's natural disasters.

The Prince, who is marrying Catherine Middleton on April 29, will arrive in Australia on Saturday, March 19, where he will spend two days visiting areas affected by the cyclone and flooding in Queensland.

The itinerary has not yet been made public, but Australian Monarchist League Queensland branch chairman Tristan Rogers said he expected the future King to visit areas hit by Cyclone Yasi, Brisbane and Victoria but especially the Lockyer Valley.

“Particularly Grantham, where there was significant loss of life,” Mr Rogers said.

“The focus should be on the people who lost their lives and businesses.

“I think it will be a welcome lift, especially for people whose families have been wiped out.

“I think it's fantastic given the way we've been hammered so hard by natural disasters.

“It will give people something positive, and it shows he was thinking of us at a very difficult time.

“It will have a profoundly positive impact in a sombre part of Queensland's life.”

Ipswich Mayor Paul Pisasale has vowed to do whatever it takes to get Prince William to visit the city.

Cr Pisasale said he was planning to write to Prince William yesterday with an invitation to visit Ipswich.

“By the time the sun sets today he will have an invitation,” Cr Pisasale said yesterday.

“If you don't ask, you could miss out. It'd be wonderful if he was to come. I think everybody would come out in force.

“Being a young royal, I think it would wonderful for the young people of Ipswich too.”

Vocal republican, Ipswich councillor Paul Tully declined to answer a question about whether he would you like to see the Prince visit Goodna.

An article in the Queensland Times from February 20, 1958 described the last royal visit, by the Queen Mother:

“Displaying with every gesture the radiant and lovable personality which has endeared her to millions, Her Majesty was escorted by the ceremonially-robed Mayor to the royal dais. At this stage the cheering from the flag-waving crowds surged to an excited pitch of intensity.”

After standing for the National Anthem, the Queen Mother presented a speech: “Mr Mayor I thank you most sincerely for the welcome you have extended to me on behalf of the aldermen and citizens of Ipswich and for your expressions of loyalty to the throne,” she said.

“I am very happy to be with you on what must I fear be but a brief visit to this important and historic city. Here has been most happily developed a centre of economic and industrial importance with a cultural and educational background of which your citizens may worthily feel proud.”

Previous visit:

On February 19, 1958, Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother dropped into visit Ipswich as part of her world tour.

Mayor Finimore put out a call to citizens and businesses to help beautify the city for her visit.

Businesses closed at 1.30pm to allow everyone to travel to Queens Park, where a crowd of over 12,000 people gathered.

Wanted: Miss Showgirl Entrants

FAR from the beauty pageants of old, today’s Ipswich showgirls need to have it all.

The Ipswich Show Society is searching for a local woman to become the “face” of the show as the 2011 Miss Showgirl.

Open to women between the ages of 18 and 27, contestants are judged on a range of criteria, including their general knowledge of Ipswich, as well as their personality and presentation.

The competition offered entrants the opportunity to develop public speaking and networking skills, with contestants mingling with everyone from politicians to business people, said 2010 title holder Louisa Dossetor.

She said it also gave women the opportunity to learn the finer arts of deportment and etiquette.

“It is not a fundraiser and it is not a beauty pageant,” Ms Dossetor said.

“Young women are judged on how they carry themselves and represent their local region.”

The Mt Crosby pharmaceutical sales rep said the competition also enabled young women to gain a range of marketable skills.

“When you finish school and uni, sometimes it is a struggle to find things to put on your resume,” Ms Dossetor said.

“By being part of the competition it shows you are involved in the local community.”

Ms Dossetor said the competition was also a great way to meet other like-minded young women.

“The competition has moved with the times,” she said.

“They have changed the age requirements so older people can be involved.

“It is definitely not old-fashioned.”

The 28-year-old, who went on to beat other young women from the Ipswich region’s country shows at the sub-chamber level, represented the region at the Queensland Country Life Miss Showgirl awards at the Brisbane Ekka last year.

Ms Dossetor said for four days while she was competing at a state final, she and her fellow finalists had been “treated like royalty”.

“To go to government house and meet Governor General Penelope Wensley was a real privilege,” she said.

Entries in the 2011 competition close on April 1.

For more information, prospective entrants can ring the show office on 3281 1577 or visit the website, www.ipswichshow.com.au

Shane Watson returns to home town of Ipswich to help lift locals' spirits

SHANE Watson has revealed plans to finish his career as an opener as Australian cricket's golden boy returned to home town Ipswich yesterday to apply his Midas touch to the flood-ravaged community.

Putting an end to debate over his long-term role in the Australian set-up, Watson scuppered suggestions of a shift down the order after blasting a majestic 161 not out to sink the Poms in the one-day series opener at the MCG on Sunday night.

Less than 14 hours after his 150-ball masterpiece, Watson arrived in Ipswich, reaching out to his people as he surveyed the wreckage of Queensland's worst natural disaster in 37 years.

Ipswich mayor Paul Pisasale said Watson's presence underlined the region's solidarity and the 29-year-old is determined to be the backbone of Australia's top order for as long as he wears the baggy green.

"Absolutely, I love being an opener," said Watson, who made a guest appearance at Bunnings in Booval yesterday to sign autographs for locals.

"It's such a great challenge, whether it's day one when it's swinging and seaming with the bowlers nice and fresh, or day three when you can take them down. I want to stay there for good. It's the challenge I want."

Watson began his Test career in the middle order but the blond all-rounder has emerged as one of Australian cricket's finest openers.

Since being elevated to the apex of the order against England in July 2009, Watson has hammered 1696 Test runs from 36 innings at the world-class average of 49.88.

But his one-day pyrotechnics show on Sunday night is evidence of how much more he can offer in the Test arena. "It's one big score, it's nice to do it but I don't think it will put an end to it [criticism of his struggle to convert starts into huge Test scores]," said Watson, who failed to score a century during the Ashes despite getting a start in nine of his 10 innings.

"I will have to do it consistently over a period of time to know that I'm doing the right things mentally and technically. It's a nice step but I have to do it consistently."

Watson toured parts of Ipswich with Pisasale yesterday and paid tribute to the toughness of the locals.

"It's humbling. All I wanted to do growing up was emulate someone like Allan Langer, who was playing for the Broncos, and also Craig McDermott [former Test bowler], who'd been through the same system I'd been through," Watson said.

"Ipswich people are tough people. There's no doubt it is a hard time but I know everyone will come together to help out.

"I've been very lucky to grow up in Ipswich and get the grounding in life and cricket. They are a resilient society so it's nice to be able to help the people."

Chinese beauties showcase beautiful Queensland What's On Ipswich

Twelve top models from China and Hong Kong will turn South East Queensland into their studio this week as part of a new Tourism Queensland campaign targeting key Asian markets, Tourism Queensland CEO Anthony Hayes said today.

The models will be using Queensland as the backdrop for a calendar that will be distributed throughout Hong Kong, China, Taiwan and Japan.

"The photo shoot will show off the best of South East Queensland, including Brisbane by night, Sirromet Winery, Palazzo Versace and the Gold Coast’s beaches and national parks," Mr Hayes said.

"The visiting models are among Asia’s most famous and we are chuffed that South East Queensland will co-star with them in what will no doubt be a very popular calendar.

"The line up includes Hong Kong’s most famous young model Yeung Wing, also known as Angela Baby, as well as popular Hong Kong models Lynn Xiong, Mikki Yao and Liu Dan."

He said China was a significant growth market for both Brisbane and the Gold Coast.

"The number of Chinese visitors to Brisbane was up 19 percent to 62,000 over the year to March 2010, while Chinese visitors to the Gold Coast were up 15 percent to 106,000 over the same period," Mr Hayes said.

"Chinese visitors also spent $326 million on trips to Queensland, an increase of $87 million from the previous year.

"The exposure our vibrant destinations will receive through the top model calendar will hopefully help entice more Chinese visitors to come and holiday in South East Queensland."

Feedback for Restaurant at Metro Hotel Ipswich International

To everyone who worked on Saturday 6 March,

My family and I would like to thank you all for a fabulous dinner on Saturday night. My husband and I had been to your restaurant twice previously and enjoyed dinner so we decided to take our parents along. I must admit that my father was sceptical about a "nice restaurant" being in Ipswich but at the end of the evening he couldn't stop raving about the lovely food and service. Even the next morning they were all talking about what a lovely evening it was.

We all had a fantastic night - the food was great and the service from everyone, particularly, Hannah and Amy was fabulous.

A credit to everyone who was there on Saturday night.

Kind regards,

N.Sims-Chilton
