kitty korner :: my god, it's full of hair

aside from the questions about poop, the thing i get asked about most often when people find out how much of a crazy cat lady i am is how i deal with the hair. my answer is just that i deal with it. i vacuum a lot, i should buy stocks in companies that make those sticky rollers for clothes and i learn to deal with the fact that there is going to be some cat hair on me a lot of the time.

if cat hair is really going to bother you- if it's really going to be an irritant- then my advice is simple: don't get a cat. yes, there are hairless varieties [which are kind of awesome, because they feel like cuddling a hot water bottle when you hold them], but the fact is that having a cat is going to mess up your sh*t in some way and if the thought of hair is going to keep you awake at nights then it's a fair bet that there will be other things about cat ownership that you're not going to like. they're extremely clean animals, but no animal is supposed to be cleaner than us and you should see the way some people live.

things i wish i'd invented...
for those of you who can handle it, hair is an issue, but it's not the end of the world. there's no magic solution to dealing with it, you just have to make hair removal part of your regular routine. methods of cleaning it are pretty standard- vacuuming where you can, those ubiquitous lint rollers, even a damp cloth is great for getting hair off a rough surface [like a lot of textured furniture upholstery].

here are a few things i've learned about cat hair, some of which may help you, some of which may not. feel free to leave your own tips and tricks ::

1. have a brush or comb on hand. grooming your cat not only helps keep their fur healthy and mat-free, but it also allows you to control where more of the shedding takes place. a lot of dead hair will come off during the grooming process, which means it won't come off in the next half a dozen places your cat chooses to roll around.

THAT'S NOT ALL!

2. do not assume that short-haired cats are going to shed less than long-haired cats. a very long history of owning both has taught me that the only difference between the two varieties in terms of shedding is that one sheds longer hairs than the other.

3. be aware of changes in the amount of hair that your cats shed. of course, if it gets warmer, it makes sense that they'd shed more. [for years, arthur had two different fur lengths- one for the summer season, one for fall and winter. he's fashionable that way.] excessive shedding that doesn't seem to be related to the weather can be a sign of health problems or stress [like it can with you].

4. just petting your cats is an awesome way to groom them for all concerned.

5. laying on things or rubbing against things is one of the ways that cats get their scent on stuff that isn't just normally lying around like your clothes. so if you're in the habit of laying your clothes out when you're getting ready for work, or if you have nice piles of clean laundry you haven't put away yet, be aware that those are essentially large signs inviting your cats to make a deposit [hopefully hair]. you can either change your ways or just deal with it via the sticky roller.

this is really all the wisdom i have to impart. the fact is that cleaning up after a cat isn't really rocket science and there's no magic system for dealing with it. but the fact is that once you do own cats, the benefits of things like companionship and the entertainment value of watching them interact with their environment and each other are going to make the hair issues seem pretty minor. i promise.

friday favourites :: 29.07.11

ever have one of those weeks where it felt like the world was actually conspiring to stop you from making any kind of progress whatsoever? i seem to have had a lot of them lately, which leads me to believe that either the cosmos is storing up some tremendous, mind-blowing gift for me [any time now, people, any time], or that i was, as i've long suspected, a very nasty person in a former life.

but there are people having worse weeks than me. every time i need to be reminded of that, i turn on the news and behold the poor, struggling journalists trying to get straight answers out of american politicians. it's kind of remarkable to hear a "yes/ no" question answered using almost every word in the english language except yes or no. of course, if things don't improve, there are going to be a lot of people having very bad weeks in the near future and not the ones who probably deserve to.

still, there are good things in the world. sometimes you just have to look very carefully. or think about it. here are a few things that helped me shake off the funk, at least temporarily.

pushed to the left and loving it :: whenever people gripe about the lack of good journalistic work on the internet, i want you to point them towards this blog. this woman's research is incredible and her writing style is extremely readable. it's also a fascinating look into the mind of someone who has been surprised by the evolution of her own political ideas. she even says nice things about a member of my family, although i didn't realise that until i had subscribed to her blog for a while.

maps :: i don't know where exactly this started, but i find maps absolutely fascinating. perhaps it's because, when i'm on the ground, i tend to get sort of lost in the details, so i find the contrast of a bird's eye view strangely refreshing. or maybe it's because it helps me visualise a place i've been, which is useful both as a writer and as a person who values a good bout of escapism.

MORE FAVOURITES AND THE WEEKLY CAT PIC RIGHT AFTER THE BREAK...

i do love randomly playing around with google earth, certainly [although- and i realise how sad this sounds- i get vertigo if i try to "move" over water], but i also have a collection of old-fashioned paper maps of places where i've been. i have a rule about only going buying maps of cities i've visited [often while i'm there]. i've only broken that rule once and it didn't end well.

but mostly, my map hobby allows me to enjoy cities, not destroy them, even if it's from a distance.

arrested development :: i have dom to thank for introducing me to a lot of television, but this one really deserves a special mention. it's not just that it's a funny show with memorable characters and good dialogue, the magic is really in the levels of wordplay and the incredible way in which seemingly random elements in the stories are tied together- sometimes across months or even between seasons. a film has been in development since the series was canceled, but five years on, they've apparently just got a working script finished... hey guys, if you need help i'm right here!!! until things come together, we can just be relieved that dvds of the series are plentiful and cheap and repeated viewings just seem to bring out more and more elements you missed before.

a special lady :: my mom is celebrating a milestone birthday this week and, certainly, talking to her continues to be one of my favourite parts of any day.

i will say that, while i'm happy that the heat wave has passed, i am a little bummed that this has also meant the passing of the pool. well, that and the fact that we needed to take showers.

this week, my hope is that the united states will manage to figure out a solution to their debt ceiling problem, just so that i can hear about something else. i'm also hoping that the high-pressure wave that seems to have lingered over me for too long will finally see fit to move on. seriously, i think i deserve a break.

thanks for reading and feel free to share some of the things that perked you up in the last seven days.

this week's kitty is the lovely princess julia, captured during prime napping hours. and yes, that is a large stuffed oscar the grouch that she's cuddling. if you'd lived with her this week, you'd understand why that choice is so incredibly appropriate. since she and her brother seth just turned two, i'll either put it down to the "terrible twos" or to her being a typically moody teenaged girl, depending on what system you're using.

friday favourites :: 22.07.11

i have to say that one of my favourite things at this moment is "not being covered in fur". as much as i feel like i'm suffering from the heat, every time i look at the poor army of the hirsute that still follows me from room to room, i count myself lucky. poor babies are not having a great time this week. we're trying our best to keep them hydrated inside and out- lots of water in their bowls, patting them with moist, cool hands, anything to keep the fires of hell that have apparently been vested on us at bay. it's still distinctly possible that the heat is going to make me lose the last vestiges of my sanity, but in the meantime, these are a few of the things that are keeping me sane...

THERE'S A REASON THE BREAK IS HERE, BEFORE THE FAVOURITES... YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED...

scary sex toy friday :: on fridays, i like to think about things that make me happy. on fridays, molly mounds likes to think about things that should probably never make anyone happy, despite the fact that this is their stated purpose. so each week, she posts images [probably nsfw, or at least, not safe for you if your coworkers see you admiring it] of the weirdest things anyone has ever designed for the purposes of human gratification. some things fall into the "whimsically demented" category, while others fall into the "should probably be getting a lot of therapy" category and others... well, i was going to say that i don't know who would be interested in this, but the fact is that i know a lot of gentlemen who are the exact demographic that this company had in mind and who are probably adding this to their christmas and birthday lists right now.

something new :: dom shot this short film on his iphone, if you can believe. seeing this sort of thing to me is like magic, because, even if i could envision it, i'd have no idea how to actually do it so that it looked the way i wanted. even knowing what it is- having seen the elements that went into making it- i find it an unnerving thing. and no, conversion is absolutely nothing like this.

facing a fear :: a ways back, i started writing out my "diary"- my notes and recollections, basically- of the process of shooting "conversion". i chugged along at a decent pace for a while, until i came upon the point in filming that i really hadn't wanted to think about. but last night, high on heat and insomnia, i decided that the time had come to scratch that particular carryover off my to-do list. because sometimes, even when something sucks, it can do you some good to talk about it. even when the person you're talking to is yourself. did it change my life? no, but i feel kind of good that i've gone back to finish what i started.

this is going to be awesome when the water slide opens
the white trash pool :: when i was a kid, you could not get me out of the water in the summer. in fact, the last time i spent any significant time on the beach, people still had difficulty getting me out of the water. when the weather gets hot, there's very little i like to do more than jump in either a pool or the ocean, but i unfortunately don't live near the ocean and i'm not [yet] wealthy enough to afford a pool.

i could, of course, go to a community pool, except that i'm not that keen on diving into a vat of other people's urine and i'm really kind of lazy and spoiled and would prefer the pool to be near enough that i could jump in whenever the urge takes me.

sorry, kids' swim isn't until five.
normally, i just suffer through this, but the current heat wave is making dry land unbearable, so dom and i have made our own home pool right in the apartment. ok, technically, our pool is known as a bathtub and i can't swim in it [although i can do yoga stretches, which feel nice], but it's refreshing, it's available 24 hours a day [including when i have insomnia], i know and trust the cleaning staff and, most importantly, it's 100% urine-free.

so what made your week better? what perked you up when you were feeling crappy? or made your good days even better? feel free to share. and might i suggest, if you're one of the over 300 million people caught up in the current heat wave, that you treat yourself to some cocktails by the pool? you deserve it.

here's this week's cat cuteness. and yes, this was taken at the height of yesterday's 46C/ 113F heat. some people know the value of a good cuddle.

kitty korner

you'll clean my leavings and be happy about it.
i was going to start off this piece by saying "it's not easy being a crazy cat lady", but, in fact, it is easy being a crazy cat lady. it's really easy, especially when you discover that there are crazy cat men out there who are going to be just as protective as you are of your feline children. the most difficult thing about multiple-cat parenting you're likely to encounter is the fish-eye that you get from other primates when you tell them how many cats you have. here's a hint on how to deal with that: if they give you weird looks, they're probably assholes and your life is probably better without them in it.

when people have concerns about the number of cats you have, the concern is generally about one thing and one thing only: the litter. [ok, they might also be concerned if you don't have your cats neutered, but unless you plan on breeding them, neutering is a no-brainer. and only people with brains should own cats.]

i'm astute enough to note the pleasant look of surprise that seems to appear on the faces of our guests when we're feeling comfortable enough with humanity to bear having people over and i know what that look means. it means that they're astonished, because they came over expecting the house to stink. congratulations, folks, you've just learned an important lesson about cat ownership: how clean the place smells has less to do with the number of cats and more to do with how the owners choose to take care of the "leavings".

DISCOVER MY SECRETS...

most guide books will tell you that you should have one litter pan per cat plus one extra. i'm not entirely sure who made that rule, but i'm willing to bet that no one checked with the cats. years of multiple cat ownership has taught me one thing in that regard: cats aren't any more eager to have their living quarters strewn with open latrines than you are. when i've offered multiple litter pans in multiple locations, the response has generally been for everyone to use a single pan in a single location. in fact, the only way i've persuaded the cats to use more than one pan is to have them side by side in the same room [the bathroom, which they, as i, prefer]. so chances are that having litter pans throughout the house is going to do nothing except encourage your cats to play in the litter and track that sandy crap all through the house, like kids returning from a day at the beach.

as for the "correct" number of litter pans, my experience has been that it has more to do with the preferences of the owners. if you use a scoopable cat litter [i swear by arm & hammer multi-cat and, in fact, arthur now rejects any other litter], you'll be able to get things out of the way as they appear, but eventually, the entire pan will need to be emptied and refilled. i personally find the emptying the whole thing part to be a pain in the arse, which is why i encourage my kids to spread the love between a couple of adjacent pans. this gives me a longer break between complete refills and lets them have fun by standing with their front paws in one pan and their back paws in the other, just to be weird. it all works out very well.

of course, there's still the question of what happens to all the clumps of concentrated evil. i used to live in an apartment building that had one of those convenient garbage chutes, which is perfect for this sort of work. [except for the time that someone dropped a bag of kitty waste down the chute as the superintendent was reaching into the bin, resulting in that person having a bag of litter explode on their head, which as far as i'm concerned, is what you deserve if you're stupid enough to lean into the bin at the bottom of a garbage chute, but my superintendents didn't see it that way.] if you're not lucky enough to live in such a building [or if the superintendents insist on blaming you for the fact that they got hit with an exploding bag of poop], that means that you have to be prepared to deal with the fact that the soiled litter might not leave your abode for a few days.

your salvation. made in china.
this, my friends, was what originally made horrified first-time suburban parents come up with the diaper genie and the good news is that they've now made one for cats. behold the litter locker ii. i trust it to deal with all of the grossness i can stuff into it. dom found this and i still marvel at the simple perfection of its design. you buy the unit and other than that, you just need to get replacement "doughnuts" of plastic sheeting that you form into bags. you drop litter in the top, open the trap door and it falls into the bottom, where you don't have to think of it again until it fills up. then you just knot the bag and throw the whole thing out on garbage day. it locks away the scent and the dirt and it doesn't require that you wreck the plumbing for the whole neighbourhood by trying to flush kitty litter down the city pipes. [if you think they're pissed from getting hit in the head with a bag of it, wait 'til you see them figure out that you've just managed to create poop-laced cement in the plumbing.]

to give you an idea of the costs involved, we go through a $10 doughnut roughly every two weeks. with five. the economics of this sell themselves as do the olfactory benefits. i recommend this to everyone i know with cats. seriously. you will not fear the litter again. unless you stick your head somewhere it's not supposed to be.

friday favourites 15.07.11

well, after my week off, i'm back to fill you in on the little things that made my time better in the last little while. i have an abiding fury with canada post, owing to the fact that i'm stuck depending on them, which has tainted much of my week, but given that i got to celebrate dom's b-day [see my earlier post], which involved getting together with friends at cagibi [which is remarkably similar to what we do almost every wednesday, but involved more drinking this time] and listening to the electro stylings of dj tyg, it's certainly a week that had its high points. several of them, in fact...

1. a cosmetic find :: i wasn't even looking, because i assumed i'd missed the boat long ago, but i managed to score a tube of nars' much-coveted, no-longer-available "strawberry fields" lip gloss. as far as glosses go, i'm a sucker for cheery, saturated magentas, so it does seem like fate that this gloss and i eventually found each other. it's a perfect summery shade, the kind of thing that sort of yells at the sun "hey! i can be all bright and stuff too!" and in fact, that's what i did. you can see the results here. if you're in the montreal area and think this looks appealing, you should consider checking the nars counter at the bay downtown. no one said i got the last one.

MUCH MORE AFTER THE BREAK AND YOUR CAT OF THE WEEK...

i think you're awesome, too
2. my love, justified :: i was kind of horrified this week that i felt compelled to write a letter to fluevog telling them i was unhappy about something. long story short, i've basically lost two heel caps off very lightly-worn shoes in the last couple of weeks. i didn't want to be nasty, and i wasn't, but i sort of felt rattled that after a very long time of being a dedicated e-vog-gelist was i was suddenly feeling a bit shaken.

the response, as i gleefully pointed out to dom, is the kind of thing that should be shown to people in business school. it was prompt, but at the same time, it showed that the person who received it had followed up to get me answers. and those answers make good sense, which is really all i wanted. there was a solution offered and the entire tone was gracious without seeming obsequious or phony. well done!

and fyi, they're having their annual summer sale right now, so it is a great time to check out what they have available.

3. schadenfreude :: if there is a better feeling for a thinking observer of media than watching rupert murdoch twist in the wind, i can't think of it. oh, wait. but this is really so much bigger.

further proof that gingers have no souls
don't get me wrong. i'm so disgusted by everything i hear about this scandal that i'm finding it difficult to eat while watching the news. i mean, i knew that murdoch's empire was rotten, but this is bad even by the standards of a corporation that allows something it calls a news agency to knowingly propagate lies in the name of inflaming popular rhetoric, so that meaningful issues cannot be discussed in a rational, comprehensive way [assuming they can be discussed at all]. ahem. i'm getting carried away.

it's just that all of the disgust i can muster isn't going to change what's happened. so you'll forgive me if i just sit back and hope that the rot is profound enough to bring down the whole castle. this morning's news that executive rebekah brooks- who was the head of "news of the world" when it was engaged in the worst of its phone hacking and who was subsequently promoted [let's all think about that for a second]- has fallen on her sword is just the latest thing that makes me hope that, just maybe, there is some justice in the world.

4. a job well done :: those of you who follow me on twitter saw this picture, which is what happened when my superintendent came in to paint the recently rebuilt ceiling in my bathroom. apparently, he decided to test the wall to see if it needed some grouting and accidentally ended up pulling most of the wall down. well, to be honest, it was kind of an accident waiting to happen.

but now look at my bathroom.

not only is it freshly painted, but it's freshly tiled and grouted and it's cleaner than it has been ever in this century, thanks to the use of a lot of elbow grease [by the superintendent] and a cleaner that i was told not breathe too close to. [strangely, my asthma has been better the last couple of days.]

i think i'm a little intimidated by it. i feel like i might not be clean enough to bathe there, which is kind of a difficult problem to solve. but damn, it's sparkly and white and large parts of it are newer than the hair that probably still inhabits the drain. not too shabby. not shabby at all.

those are a few of my bright spots this week. feel free to share yours. this week, of course, i'll be reserving time in my schedule to sit down and watch as much coverage as i can possibly stand of mad murdoch's woes, but i promise not too get too smug. i have a feeling he'll weasel out one way or the other.

speaking of smug, i have to say that this is becoming a problem for me. i've recently started forcing myself to button down and keep detailed lists of things i need to do, so that i can track my own progress and not forget to do things for three months like i normally do. the sense of satisfaction and accomplishment this brings should, at best, qualify as "normal", but i've been kind of lax for the last little while, letting myself get intimidated by random things i haven't been getting done, so i feel like i've been oh so very productive lately. i've reached that stage where i can't help crowing about things i've gotten done, which is probably incredibly irritating for people who have to be around me [dom]. so i'll add a note to my list that i have to not be quite so proud of myself. after all, i've been quite productive, but i also accidentally used dish soap in my mopping water.

regular readers of the blog might recall that i have a real love for things purple, so this just seemed like the purrrrfect kitteh of the week photo...

thanks for reading and have a great week!

friday favourites 01.07.11

it's canada day! that's about as much nationalism as i can muster at the moment. it's also friday, which means it's that time where i pause on reflect on the things that brought a few smiles and warm feelings to the week that was. this week can be tentatively titled "sh*t i found on the internet", since it seems like this was the week in which the web decided to reveal its humourous, beautiful and useful bounty to me. hey, it's a big world and it turns out that you can access surprising parts of it while sitting on your butt.

here's what put a curl in my lips this week ::

the bloggess :: a lot of people saw her post last week about picking your battles, enough that her site crashed and things went all crazy. but you'd really be losing out if you didn't take the time to go and look at the rest of her site, as well as her links to her advice columns on parenting and sex [which are ideas that go together, even if you don't want to think about it. don't get a mental image.] you can also peruse her web shop, which has some beyoncé the giant chicken merchandise now that the dust has settled.

beauty and the bullshit :: a blog from a former cosmetic industry insider that helps people like me understand how they're being manipulated. it's fun, it's practical and it's what you've always suspected, but the detail that she gives on how you're being conned is enlightening and gives you an idea of how to evaluate what you see with a critical eye. [assuming that everything is lies is not evaluating with a critical eye. some stuff works and you want to know how to tell the difference.] note :: i've linked to her blogspot address, but i understand that this will be switching over to her own "proper" address in short order.

THERE'S MORE! PLUS THE WEEKLY CAT PIC...

bats. fuck yeah :: i've gone on about my love for owls, but i'm also really fond of bats. last year, when dom and i were at his high school reunion, we were looking through the building so that he could walk me through moments in his past, as well as show me what places gave him some inspiration for his first film project, hallowed halls, we came across one flaying through the school's own hallowed halls. it gave me a strange thrill. just looking at the images that people have uploaded fills me with wonder and, in a lot of cases, makes me squee.

shoe therapy :: it's been a while since i picked up a new pair of fluevogs, so i took advantage of an invite to a "pre-sale" event they had at the local fluevog store this week. in fact, both dom and i indulged and our feet are the happier for it. the sale continues both in fluevog retail locations and on line while stock lasts. please make sure to ask my permission before ordering size 6 in anything. i have dibs. seriously. if anyone would like to buy me a birthday present, it's still several months away, but you can save money by buying early.

bitchcakes :: this is exactly what i need to be reading as i attempt to progress on my diet. perhaps it's the fact that we're around the same age, or the fact that she believes in the importance of saving weight watchers point for booze, or the fact that we're both neurotic, but i find her blog really inspirational. it's refreshingly honest and human and it also makes me feel extraordinarily lazy, because i know damn well i'm never going to be in the shape that she is, but it does give me a good idea of what one determined person can do.

the main problem i've run into with my own diet this week is that i've not been making myself eat small meals on a regular basis, but rather letting myself get really, really, really hungry, which is hell on the metabolism and leaves me wanting to devour huge quantities of food at once. while i haven't necessarily been bad about dieting, i haven't been pacing myself properly, which is kind of key to doing it right. this week, i shall behave myself and be healthy, i swear.

one other thing that i've started to crack down on a bit is making myself record details of my dreams. this is something i like to track, because i like to know what my mind is thinking when i'm not there, but i also find it a great source of writing inspiration. even if it's just one particular image, it often helps. so i'm also promising to be disciplined about that. i'll kick my own butt into all sorts of shape.

i hope that everyone has had a fulfilling week and that good stuff continues to haunt you. feel free to share your high points [or low points, if you need to vent] and, as always, thanks for reading. here's your kitteh pic of the week. this started out as a brother-sister cuddle between seth and julia, which was cute enough, but hecubus decided he wanted in and that he had to be right in the thick of things, which is usually where he's most comfortable.

friday favourites 24.06.11

the party's this way
bonne fête st. jean! in case you're outside of quebec, this is the annual day when everything shuts down for a big-ass party. i remember it chiefly from the years i lived in the "working class" neighbourhood [note- like most "working class" neighbourhoods, no one actually seemed to work except me] of hochelaga as the day when the people who sat on their doorsteps all summer would be drunk by 8h30 rather than 10h30. back when i first moved to montreal, it was also an excuse for an annual riot, but the city seems to have collectively outgrown that. hm, i just realised that the last sentence makes it sound like i had something to do with the riots...

well, although the first of two short work weeks means less when you're not working, it is still a festive time of the year and it's nice to live in a part of the country that still takes its vacation time very seriously. although for the first time in all the years i've been aware of the holiday the forecast is calling for bad weather, it still seems like a lot of things to keep me perky. here are a few things that helped put a smile on my face during the past week.

feedback :: thanks very much to everyone who took the time to comment either here or through other venues about some of the posts i've made this week. in particular, it really made me feel good hearing from those who appreciated the post on the mac "bloggers' obsessions" collection. this is a funny collection, because no one has ever tried something quite like this. i think it's encouraging that the reaction was obviously greater than mac had anticipated, with two of the shades selling out before the collection was officially launched on line. since mac retains all the rights to these products, we can hope [and assume, since it would make financial sense] that they'll re-promote the successful shades in the future and have them available to an international audience.

because i already showed off a look with sonoran rain and hocus pocus, here's a look at the other shades that i picked up "in action". my thoughts on these shades haven't changed since my original review- each has the hallmark of someone who truly cared about getting it right. "parisian skies", like "hocus pocus", is extremely pigmented and blended very, very well. "jealousy wakes" packs a big punch of colour. although i found my brush stirred up a bit of powder on the surface, it was not powdery on application [i.e., no nasty powder fallout everywhere]. and considering that prince is playing in montreal this weekend, i figure it's only appropriate that i give "all of my purple life" a swing in his honour.

"parisian skies"

knowing that people who write about cosmetics can be called on to be creators, it got me to thinking of what i'd do should i be called on for ideas. so if mac [or another company] feels like doing this sort of thing again, i'd like to say that i already have some ideas ripe for the plucking...

all the inspiration i need
eye shadows, either one quad or two duos [hi nars]
simon- a light grey-turquoise shade with a slight gold shimmer, exactly matched to the colour of simon's beautiful eyes
hecubus- a rich, ultra-dark brown with a sheen, just like the colour of hecubus' sumptuous seal points
julia- a light silvery platinum matched to the shade of my little girl's eyes
seth- a rich, muted magenta ["antique fuchsia"] like the colour of seth's adorable and often protruding tongue

eye liner
arthur- a super-soft rich black liner with a rusty-coloured shimmer [perfect for making a slightly different cat's-eye]

lipstick
more like space- a deep blackened red colour with a blue green sheen

that's my dream line up. [well, i could probably think of more lip products, but i'll stop there...]

back to the future :: now that traditional radio is pretty much entirely obsolete, i'll be making a triumphant, one-time only return to the airwaves on july 2nd on montreal's ckut-fm. thanks to the miracle of technology, you can listen in on line from anywhere in the world.

for those of you who don't know, i worked for years in community radio, starting in halifax and then moving on to montreal. the reason that this blog is called "more like space" is because that was my radio show in both cities. i loved doing radio. it kept me actively interested in music, because i was always eager for something new to share. my time at these stations also exposed me to a lot of different music and culture and to a lot of different people, the importance of which i can't overstate. but most important, it was through talking on the radio that i managed to finally start to build up some self-confidence. that period of my life was the first time i ever remember being able to talk about myself- not just me as an imitation of what i saw around me, but me as a distinct individual- and, as you can see, i'm still doing quite well on this front.
is it supposed to sound like that?

i'm certain that my radio shows never had the profound effect on anyone else that they did on me, but i do know that i was able to connect some people with music that they liked, which is a good thing to do. i even found a reference to my show in a footnote of someone's stars of the lid review. ironically, it's a misremembering, because, while i was on air during that time, i never did do the whole "sound collage" thing. i suppose it might have sounded like i did, though.

so i'm taking advantage of the opportunity to go back on the airwaves and play a lot of music that i don't get to do so much in my live dj sets. so it'll be a more experimental, more "spacey" more like space. i'll be occupying the space normally reserved for "stereophobic", but since the host is on hiatus, i'm allowed out to play this once. i hope i remember how it works...

as i mentioned last week, i've put myself on a diet in order to shed a little excess baggage i seem to have accumulated. so far, so good. i have returned to my proven method of paying careful attention to calories consumed versus calories expended. i can get a bit obsessive over details, so this is actually something that keeps my brain calm. after a couple of weeks, the process of balancing these things in my head becomes natural and i won't have to think about it consciously so much. getting started, however, can be a bit of a pain, because i find i have to expend way too much energy thinking about food. and the last thing you want to do when you're arguing daily with your body about how much it really needs, as opposed to how much it thinks it needs, is to be put in a situation where food is front of mind. as i said, this is a phase of my dieting process that tends to pass after a couple of weeks. along with the phase that involves my skin breaking out because it's not so sure about the changes i'm forcing on myself.

i'm hopeful at the moment that this week sees an end to the postal strike that has stopped all letter traffic around the country. like most people, i use the postal system infrequently and rely on it less every year, but there are still things that have to be sent through the post, unless one wants to incur the hefty charges of private couriers. as we try to get conversion in front of as many industry people and festivals as we can, it would be kind of nice if we could, you know, send copies of the damn film.

both sides in this dispute have done a piss-poor job of making their case. both seem to be assuming that the issues are just self-evident, but that isn't true. i'd say that hurts the union a lot more than the corporation, although the union has at least thrown up a page [and yes, given the quality of the information- completely lacking in statistics and clear terminology, that double entendre is intentional] outlining their concerns. canada post's web site simply contains media releases with no useful information whatsoever. i could always try watching the ndp filibuster to try to block back to work legislation from being passed through the house of commons, which might give me some information [although more likely it would just cure my insomnia and leave me in the dark]. what i think would be appropriate is that, given that the corporation and its workers draw money from the public coffers [your tax dollars at work. or not], both should be required as a matter of course to make any formal offers readily available to the public. i just wouldn't advise putting them in the mail.

and finally, this is an oldie but a goody as far as photos of the cats go... seth and julia were still pretty much babies here... they grow up so quickly...

have a great week and thanks very much for making this the busiest week ever on more like space!

friday favourites 17.06.11

ok, i am prepared to say that this week had some favourites. a lot of the previous week's irritants remain, but i'm generally feeling a little less angry and hostile about the world in general. here are a few reasons why...

a new 'do :: i've been getting generally frustrated with my hair for the last few weeks, as i always do when the summer comes around. this is due to a combination of factors such as the fact that i have extremely thick hair that tends to run a bit dry, the fact that montreal gets extremely dusty when it gets hot and that crap gets trapped in my giant hedge of hair. i'd also reached that point where my previous hair cut had become lost in the outgrowth- whatever shape and style it had had going in had been overwhelmed and so i was getting rather shapeless... so in a fit of pique, i took dom up on his offer to cut it. since i'm a little finicky about how my hair frames my face, i did most of the work on the top/ front and dom did the overall structure and the back. as with many things, we seemed to have a shared vision of how we wanted the end result to look despite not discussing an action plan [in part, because neither of us has a sufficient grasp of haircut jargon to make such a conversation of any use.] i have to say that while our working method required more fine tuning and a few more spot checks than a regular trip to the hair salon, the end result makes me pretty happy. so guess what, kids- you can do this at home!

THERE'S MORE! PLUS THIS WEEK'S KITTEH PIC FEATURING SETH & HECUBUS

recycling inspiration :: i have come to a sad realisation this week: i have put on weight. now everyone puts on and loses weight as a regular part of life, but in this case, i've put on enough that i can feel it sitting on me, i can feel that extra drag on my body. i'm not at my heaviest, but i'm above what i'd call my comfort zone and that means that i need to do something about it.

this isn't the first time that i've been forced to actually put myself on a diet, of course. although my weight tends to be fairly stable, it has a tendency to creep up when i'm not paying attention, because i really love food. it's just something i have to remember to watch more carefully, particularly since i'm not the most active person in the world. [nor am i the most inactive, by a long stretch.]

so this week, i looked back on the blog posts that i'd done chronicling the first time i took off a bunch of weight [a lot more than i need to take off at the moment] and was surprised that reading about my past adventures and roughly what i did made things seem much more manageable and achievable than just thinking about it randomly. it's nice to be able to look back on those things and remember that you are capable of doing what you set out to do [even though you may have to set out and do it again at some point]. and it's strangely encouraging to think that i can encourage myself.

working on a mystery :: i've always been intrigued by scents. the whole logic of scents being tied to memory and scent receptors being located in a particularly ancient, mysterious part of the brain is something i've never personally verified, but it seems to have a certain truthiness to it. both dom and i share this trait, which is probably why we have about ten pounds of incense in our house at any given time. i'm fussy about my scents, too. stray too far from a natural base and i tend to react badly. i'm not allergic, but my nose is a picky nose. [those last two words look wrong, but are actually correct, despite the fact that it looks silly.]

why did this guy show up as a search result for "rose musk perfume"?
because my nose constantly seeks out new adventures [sometimes to its own chagrin], i don't tend to stick with any one perfume. anymore.

you see, there was a time in my young life when i started wearing perfumes and i almost immediately hit on one that was perfect. i was 15 and it was rose musk perfume oil from the body shop. virtually everyone i knew had their tea rose perfume oil, while a few of the more daring ones went with white musk. but i had to be different and so i got rose musk.

the scent lived up to its name and, while i tried other scents from time to time, i never stayed away from rose musk very long. it was my fallback until 1996, just after i first moved to montreal, when it was discontinued. i bought what i could afford and stocked up, but inevitably, the supply dwindled and my scent was gone. and nothing else smelled like that. [even its rich reddish-amber colour was unique.]

i even went so far as to contact the body shop to ask if they could tell me the ingredients. after all, they aren't making it, so why should they feel the need to deprive its fans of what they love? turns out, they didn't see it that way. however, more recently, through the miracle of the internet, i've been finding hints from others who, like me, are still eager for a fix. while there's nothing "official", people whose noses have been better trained than mine are gradually working their way through the layers of scents that form the final product. here's one such person's list:

Top: Musk, Tea Rose
Heart: Musk, Rose, Violet
Base: Musk, Jasmine, Rose, Iris, Amber, Patchouli, Vetiver, hints of Peach, Oakmoss, Vanilla

the mention of tea rose, which i normally think of as delicate, seems a little off to me, but i think that, from what i know of scents, this list seems pretty close to accurate. [you can see the original review here.]

i'm closing in on it, i can feel it.

at the moment, i'm grateful that, having just returned from seeing hyper bottom live with clara engel and white noise supremacists, the gods of timing seem to be smiling on me tonight. no sooner was i ensconced here, comfy in my nightie, face smeared with another lush mask i'm trying [i love being a guinea pig!] when the heavens opened and the night went from being hot and humid to being cool and fresh [and wet]. i always notice when those sorts of things work against me... i figure it's good to notice when they go in your favour.

here's a couple of guys who always know how to chill out and appreciate the good things in life...

thanks for reading!

friday favourites 10.06.11 [the un-favourites]

the difficulty in seeing the bright side of things is that, if fate punches you in the eye often enough, your vision becomes extremely limited. that's me this week. and normally, because i think it's healthier for me and for those who come in contact with me, i try to maintain a cool, balanced perspective and remember that, even when things suck, there are reasons to be happy. i don't do this because of a desperate "stuart smalley"-esque [although it apparently worked for him] need to convince myself that everything is ok, but because i think it's way too easy to become bitter, self-defeating and angry. and it's way too easy to miss things that really deserve to be savoured. there's a lot of subtle emphasis on the importance of not enjoying life too much- a suspiciousness accorded to any activity that doesn't carry the stigma of work and sacrifice and i personally consider that insidious characteristic to be behind a lot of ugly realities we all have to bear with.

but some times, one just has to take stock and say fuck all the happy things.

seriously, i've just had one of those weeks where it's really difficult to take a moment to think about positive things, because even the most positive things seem contaminated by the slimy muck of the rest of the world.

let's start with unemployment. i've been looking for work for about six months- i toss that figure out, because it's apparently at that crucial point when employers start to assume that you've passed your best before date and that there must be something wrong with you. i'm glad i found that little tidbit of information out this week, when there's absolutely nothing i can do to get around it. i have a decade or more of experience in my field [marketing], sterling references from past employers, a proven ability to adapt very quickly to a wide variety of industries. you'd think that something would turn up.

these things take time, of course [although they're apparently supposed to take six months or less], but it's still pretty frustrating, particularly when prospective employers treat you rudely. yes, it happens. and every time it happens, i make a mental note that the next time i have to hire someone, i am going to be on my best behaviour, because there's really no excuse not to be.

BUT WAIT, IT GETS WORSE! [BUT DON'T WORRY, THERE'S A CAT AT THE END]

i suppose it also helps if, when you're working with an agency [although my last few jobs have come that way, i have supremely mixed feelings about them], the person who serves as your contact takes the time to note pertinent details on your file. i find out this week that one of the main agents i've been dealing with accidentally wrote down my minimum salary requires down as being $10- $15k per year higher than they actually are. i'm not going to say no to anything higher, but it would be nice if i weren't being automatically dropped from consideration because of false information.

and on a related note, i think that one of the very worst things about being unemployed is seeing some of the driveling idiots who do have jobs. witness the case of krista erickson, an employee [i'm not going to taint the profession by calling her a journalist] of sun media, who decided she was entitled to demand a refund for all arts funding by attacking canadian interpretive dancer margie gillis.

the temerity of a woman who worked for years at the taxpayer-funded cbc demanding a reckoning of what an internationally renown arts figure has done to justify the $1.2 million [over almost fifteen years beggars belief. i vote that, before she is allowed to say another word about the arts, krista erickson be forced to pay back her gross earnings from any work she did for the cbc. let her stand behind her convictions.

and speaking of women who are an embarrassment, there was one story that i did consider using as a "friday favourite" this week, but then reconsidered.

as you may have heard, american leader historian politically-inclined celebrity sarah palin received a harsh snub from former british prime minister margaret thatcher, who not only refused to meet with her, but refused to do so because such a meeting would be belittling for the "iron lady". belittling.

the face of hope?
ok, it's kind of hard not to admire thatcher's ability, even when filtered through a press flak, to speak pretty damn plainly, but for crying out loud how low has the world sunk that margaret thatcher is one of its bright spots????

this is the woman who seemed to believe that privatising every government holding in the united kingdom would cure cancer. she made humping the leg of u.s. foreign policy popular before tony blair brought it back with such vigour [including supporting such peace-loving regimes as the khmer rouge]. and, lest we forget, the poll tax...

suddenly, looking at the political landscape, the old girl doesn't look so bad anymore. public debate has deteriorated so spectacularly that it doesn't even matter that the bulk of thatcher's policies were pretty inhumane and reprehensible, because the people, the thinking people, long only to hear the voice of someone who can construct a simple sentence and who shows some semblance of an education. far from being a favourite, the fact that this was a highlight for me this week actually makes that world seem all the more miserable.

and just to underline that sense of unabated misery, this week saw the deepening of a rift between videotron and me- something i was hoping to avoid in light of my atrocious break-up with bell canada. things started out really promisingly with videotron. they were helpful, they were pleasant to deal with and their service was no-hassle. that's really all i ask of my internet, cable and telephony: lack of hassle.

unfortunately, something has gone wrong and, as any good businessman will tell you, you learn what a company is made from when something goes wrong. briefly, someone was able to access my account and vastly exceed my data transfer allowance for the entire month. this has happened for several months in a row, despite the fact that our internet habits have not changed. our equipment- the computers and the router we use to allow both computers to access the internet simultaneously- are secure. that's not just my opinion- the equipment is secure according to the standards that videotron laid out.

after weeks of back and forth between videotron customer service that have probably taken a few years off my life, i have hit a brick wall the likes of which i have never seen. when i tell videotron that the equipment under my responsibility was secured and that highly risky wi-fi was never used or even enabled, i get the standard line that our usage is what's recorded, so we must have done it. we haven't. believe me, i'm aware of the amount of data transfer that's gone on in this house. it isn't us. but according to videotron, it has to be us because, if our equipment is secured, there is no other way that our account could possibly be accessed. how's that? let me tell you exactly what i was told by videotron customer service:

the videotron network is 100% secure.

yes folks, that's right. hackers can take down the pentagon, the stock market and satellites in space, but they cannot compromise the integrity of quebec's cable provider.

what's worse? not only to they refuse to admit that there is even the possibility that the fault is theirs, not only do they aggressively assert that i am either lying or uninformed [believe me, the politesse drops in a hurry when you start to stand up for yourself and show some knowledge of how internet connections work] but their solution to prevent the problem from happening again is to try to sell more services to customers who are already being gouged for services they aren't using. if you want, they'll sell you products to improve your computer's security, not that they say it will actually help, because if they saud that, it would imply some level of responsibility.

towards the end of today's installment in the soap opera, i finally asked what notice i had to give if i wanted to terminate my contract with them. [i asked this because of the duplicitous actions of bell, of course] and the person on the phone- the individual who averred the apparent hack-proofery of the network- told me that there was no notice required. and, in obvious reference to bell's policies, he added "we're not that kind of company". ah yes, videotron, i know you're not that kind of company and that was always one of your strengths in my eyes, but leaving the guy who beats you for the guy who cheats on you and gives you the clap isn't really a step up.

believe me, if i ever get within spitting distance of the person who has been using my account on alternating monday nights to transfer more data than i do normally in three months' time, it'll be on my friday favourites as a hall of fame entry. until then, i guess i'm in the market for a new date to the telecommunications ball.

normally under these circumstances, i would try to get all my frustrations by writing and, indeed, i've tried to do that. i'm sensitive about my writing. the fact that i've posted it here represents a big leap for me, because i was, for a long time, too insecure about it to share it with anyone. i'm flattered when i get positive reactions and i welcome constructive criticism, but apparently god hates my writing.

in the midst of some lightning storms this week, we lost power for a short time. i had the piece that i was working on open and, although i auto-save pretty regularly, things do sometimes go wrong. and indeed, i lost a few pages of work that i'll now have to try to recreate as best i can.

was what i was doing that bad that it had to be struck down by a literal bolt of lightning? [and, might i add, that's a pretty hackneyed tool. i mean, show some creativity in your wanton destruction.]

shouldn't you have to have achieved a certain level of success for your work to get people [or deities] that pissed off?

and, when you were applying the celestial eraser to the text, did you have to make it so that it saved the bloody blank page space but not the words on it? i mean seriously, did you want me to be able to see clearly how much i'd lost by having these strange blank pages inserted at the bottom of my text?

i'm going to make myself stop there, although let's just say that i could go on for a while about things that have made the last few weeks really hard to bear. the worst part about all of this stuff is that none of it on its own would be so horrible, but it's the idea of compounding, of being kicked when i'm already pretty far down, that seems really unfair. my mother's response when i'd get truly miserable about the inequity of the world would always be to shrug and tell me in a perky voice she seemed to reserve for these occasions "well life ain't fair". i hope that she meant that i shouldn't dwell on such things, because there was no point. unfortunately, it had the effect of making things seem worse and to this day, every time i feel like something truly unfair happens to me, i hear that phrase in my head and i sink even lower.

there are always good parts and i hope that those people who are responsible for bringing good things in my life will forgive me for being a little bit of an ingrate this week.

but in the interests of trying to keep chins aloft, here's the kitty pic of the week.

sometimes, we all need a helping hand

friday favourites 03.06.11

my feet hurt. and that's a good thing, because it means that i've had a lot of time to go walking. walking is kind of a year-round favourite with me and it's more than a little frustrating that i live in a climate where walking can be impossible or highly unpleasant for so much of the year. not this week, though! i have taken advantage of this week's sunny days [and the fact that i have a lot of time on my hands and frustrations to work out] to pound the pavement, mostly in ndg and westmount and feel content that i'm keeping myself at least a little bit active.

although i really want to avoid repetitiveness, i feel like i would be remiss if i didn't point out that the segment of last night's episode of "the daily show", where jon stewart responded to eric cantor's position on tornado relief is quite possibly the best thing they've ever done. you can watch the full episode on the show's web site, unless you're in canada, in which case you go through comedy central. the segment goes right to the heat of what i think infuriates most people about cantor's statements- not that they are ludicrous on their own, but that they are so completely hypocritical. jon's definitely on top of my "men i would chase down the street if i weren't already spoken for" list this week. it's not a big list, but it's constantly evolving.

so what about some things i haven't talked about yet?

ONLY ONE WAY TO FIND OUT... AND HEY, THERE'S AN ADORABLE KITTEH AT THE END

a sense of responsibility :: mac cosmetics have long been associated with causes, particularly their phenomenally successful mac aids fund. now they're adding to that by collaborating with the u.s. government and other organisations to help fight gender-based violence. you can check out more from mac, parent company estée lauder and secretary of state hilary rodham clinton.

in addition, rumour has it that lush cosmetics, themselves no strangers to causes, will be launching a campaign in favour of legalising gay marriage. this won't mark the first time the company has taken on a controversial political topic- they campaigned against extracting oil from canada's tar sands, helping to spread awareness of the environmental risks associated with the project before the oil industry had even started hyping it in their ad campaigns. it's nice to see that someone at lush hq evidently has testicles the size of those ubiquitous bath bombs.

the mad monkette :: this is the sartorial equivalent of comfort food.

soft kill :: this is the phoenix risen from the flames of blessure grave. their new album "an open door" isn't exactly going to shake the foundations of music, but it's still a lot of fun [in a mopey kind of way]. perfect summer listening.

more fun with mac & guerlain [& nars & chanel & my new friend stila] :: what's the point in having a great paint set if you don't use your paints? i may have been forced by blogger to abandon my "by the letters" makeup experiment, but here are a few things i've been doing with some of the lovely things i've raved about... you can also check out my wicked tan. seriously. that's a tan.
