dj kali on the radio 17.07.11

thanks again to eric b. for letting me take over his auditory space and giving me the chance to play a mix of things i hadn't gotten to inflict on people in a while and some things that hadn't been broadcast outside the homestead. hope that those who were able to tune in live enjoyed what they heard. you can listen to it in convenient podcast form by clicking here. it's the one from july 16th, obviously. [because the method of archiving radio are more accurate than the people doing the programming, the show starts at approximately 4m40s into the recording and the end is a little amputated.]

here's the playlist in less exciting, but very easily followed written form [sets are separated by an asterisk]::

konstruktivists :: incognito
 eric b & ckut, neither exactly as pictured
die form :: your reality
fax cerebri :: haiphong
grim :: noble folk

*

bene gesserit :: le chanson d'ugly

radio redux

some of you may have noticed that i posted a while back about how excited i was about going back to do a radio show on july 2nd and then uncharacteristically said nothing about it ever again.

you want me to play what?!?!?
well, the original date had to get moved [my fault], but i will be doing a guest slot tomorrow from midnight to 2 est on ckut-fm. if you're in montreal, you can listen the old-fashioned way [with a radio], but everyone in the entire world with internet access can also listen by tuning in right here. although i don't know what i'd do if everyone in the world tuned in, other than avoid answering the phones, which i tend to do anyway.

this will be more the experimental "that's not music" side of dj kali, rather than the more beat-oriented "i'd prefer not to get punched in the nose so i'll be a little more amenable" dj kali, who normally appears in bars and lets people bribe her with free hooch.

all this also reminds me that i have a huge pouch with a bunch of my old playlists from halifax [vintage 1994-96] which i may get around to posting here some time, just for the hell of it. if only so that this won't be the sole memorial to my time on the radio available on the internet.

dj kali & mr. dna @ the caustic lounge 06.07.11

ah, the first wednesday of the month, time to let my hair down [which i can't do anymore, since dom helped me cut it all off] and inflict my musical taste on the assembled masses [masses being relative]. tonight's playlist featured an abundance of fuzz from mr. dna and  an abundance of technical issues from myself. thanks to all those who came out, we look forward to seeing you again in august.

dj kali & mr. dna "au naturel"

dj kali on the wheels of rusting steel

the pop group :: she is beyond good and evil
the stranglers :: get a grip on yourself

the danse society :: my heart skipped another beat
annie anxiety :: turkey girl
portion control :: chew ya to bits
maska genetik :: ernste stunde
the residents :: blue rosebuds
shockheaded peters :: blue rosebuds
[aw, you see what i did there? playing the original and then the completely unrecognisable cover? it would have been awesome except that there was a problem with one of the cables and all the audience heard was a wall of static, so tech support had to come and frig around with the cables until a track that i didn't intend on playing at all suddenly came on and that was...]
these immortal souls :: marry me [lie! lie!]
xiu xiu :: ceremony
sleep chamber :: the light pours out of me
sol invictus :: looking for europe
zero kama :: prayer of zos

so yeah, the final track was something i intended on doing, which was closing with the track that i've always used for closing [in the last few years], because i hadn't done it in a couple of months.

and then there was...

friday favourites 24.06.11

the party's this way
bonne fĂȘte st. jean! in case you're outside of quebec, this is the annual day when everything shuts down for a big-ass party. i remember it chiefly from the years i lived in the "working class" neighbourhood [note- like most "working class" neighbourhoods, no one actually seemed to work except me] of hochelaga as the day when the people who sat on their doorsteps all summer would be drunk by 8h30 rather than 10h30. back when i first moved to montreal, it was also an excuse for an annual riot, but the city seems to have collectively outgrown that. hm, i just realised that the last sentence makes it sound like i had something to do with the riots...

well, although the first of two short work weeks means less when you're not working, it is still a festive time of the year and it's nice to live in a part of the country that still takes its vacation time very seriously. although for the first time in all the years i've been aware of the holiday the forecast is calling for bad weather, it still seems like a lot of things to keep me perky. here are a few things that helped put a smile on my face during the past week.

feedback :: thanks very much to everyone who took the time to comment either here or through other venues about some of the posts i've made this week. in particular, it really made me feel good hearing from those who appreciated the post on the mac "bloggers' obsessions" collection. this is a funny collection, because no one has ever tried something quite like this. i think it's encouraging that the reaction was obviously greater than mac had anticipated, with two of the shades selling out before the collection was officially launched on line. since mac retains all the rights to these products, we can hope [and assume, since it would make financial sense] that they'll re-promote the successful shades in the future and have them available to an international audience.

because i already showed off a look with sonoran rain and hocus pocus, here's a look at the other shades that i picked up "in action". my thoughts on these shades haven't changed since my original review- each has the hallmark of someone who truly cared about getting it right. "parisian skies", like "hocus pocus", is extremely pigmented and blended very, very well. "jealousy wakes" packs a big punch of colour. although i found my brush stirred up a bit of powder on the surface, it was not powdery on application [i.e., no nasty powder fallout everywhere]. and considering that prince is playing in montreal this weekend, i figure it's only appropriate that i give "all of my purple life" a swing in his honour.

"parisian skies"
face ::
nars sheer glow foundation "mont blanc"
diorskin nude hydrating concealer "001"

chanel e/s "khaki vert"

knowing that people who write about cosmetics can be called on to be creators, it got me to thinking of what i'd do should i be called on for ideas. so if mac [or another company] feels like doing this sort of thing again, i'd like to say that i already have some ideas ripe for the plucking...

all the inspiration i need
eye shadows, either one quad or two duos [hi nars]
simon- a light grey-turquoise shade with a slight gold shimmer, exactly matched to the colour of simon's beautiful eyes
hecubus- a rich, ultra-dark brown with a sheen, just like the colour of hecubus' sumptuous seal points
julia- a light silvery platinum matched to the shade of my little girl's eyes
seth- a rich, muted magenta ["antique fuchsia"] like the colour of seth's adorable and often protruding tongue

eye liner
arthur- a super-soft rich black liner with a rusty-coloured shimmer [perfect for making a slightly different cat's-eye]

lipstick
more like space- a deep blackened red colour with a blue green sheen

that's my dream line up. [well, i could probably think of more lip products, but i'll stop there...]

back to the future :: now that traditional radio is pretty much entirely obsolete, i'll be making a triumphant, one-time only return to the airwaves on july 2nd on montreal's ckut-fm. thanks to the miracle of technology, you can listen in on line from anywhere in the world.

for those of you who don't know, i worked for years in community radio, starting in halifax and then moving on to montreal. the reason that this blog is called "more like space" is because that was my radio show in both cities. i loved doing radio. it kept me actively interested in music, because i was always eager for something new to share. my time at these stations also exposed me to a lot of different music and culture and to a lot of different people, the importance of which i can't overstate. but most important, it was through talking on the radio that i managed to finally start to build up some self-confidence. that period of my life was the first time i ever remember being able to talk about myself- not just me as an imitation of what i saw around me, but me as a distinct individual- and, as you can see, i'm still doing quite well on this front.
is it supposed to sound like that?

i'm certain that my radio shows never had the profound effect on anyone else that they did on me, but i do know that i was able to connect some people with music that they liked, which is a good thing to do. i even found a reference to my show in a footnote of someone's stars of the lid review. ironically, it's a misremembering, because, while i was on air during that time, i never did do the whole "sound collage" thing. i suppose it might have sounded like i did, though.

so i'm taking advantage of the opportunity to go back on the airwaves and play a lot of music that i don't get to do so much in my live dj sets. so it'll be a more experimental, more "spacey" more like space. i'll be occupying the space normally reserved for "stereophobic", but since the host is on hiatus, i'm allowed out to play this once. i hope i remember how it works...

as i mentioned last week, i've put myself on a diet in order to shed a little excess baggage i seem to have accumulated. so far, so good. i have returned to my proven method of paying careful attention to calories consumed versus calories expended. i can get a bit obsessive over details, so this is actually something that keeps my brain calm. after a couple of weeks, the process of balancing these things in my head becomes natural and i won't have to think about it consciously so much. getting started, however, can be a bit of a pain, because i find i have to expend way too much energy thinking about food. and the last thing you want to do when you're arguing daily with your body about how much it really needs, as opposed to how much it thinks it needs, is to be put in a situation where food is front of mind. as i said, this is a phase of my dieting process that tends to pass after a couple of weeks. along with the phase that involves my skin breaking out because it's not so sure about the changes i'm forcing on myself.

i'm hopeful at the moment that this week sees an end to the postal strike that has stopped all letter traffic around the country. like most people, i use the postal system infrequently and rely on it less every year, but there are still things that have to be sent through the post, unless one wants to incur the hefty charges of private couriers. as we try to get conversion in front of as many industry people and festivals as we can, it would be kind of nice if we could, you know, send copies of the damn film.

both sides in this dispute have done a piss-poor job of making their case. both seem to be assuming that the issues are just self-evident, but that isn't true. i'd say that hurts the union a lot more than the corporation, although the union has at least thrown up a page [and yes, given the quality of the information- completely lacking in statistics and clear terminology, that double entendre is intentional] outlining their concerns. canada post's web site simply contains media releases with no useful information whatsoever. i could always try watching the ndp filibuster to try to block back to work legislation from being passed through the house of commons, which might give me some information [although more likely it would just cure my insomnia and leave me in the dark]. what i think would be appropriate is that, given that the corporation and its workers draw money from the public coffers [your tax dollars at work. or not], both should be required as a matter of course to make any formal offers readily available to the public. i just wouldn't advise putting them in the mail.

and finally, this is an oldie but a goody as far as photos of the cats go... seth and julia were still pretty much babies here... they grow up so quickly...

have a great week and thanks very much for making this the busiest week ever on more like space!

dj kali & mr. dna @ the caustic lounge 01.06.11

having the caustic lounge on the first of the month threw me a bit... like it snuck up on me. as a result, i have to say that this set was a little further off the cuff than i usually like to get. i think that both of us managed to cover a remarkable bit of ground in these sets, which i suppose can be seen as either exciting or maddeningly schizophrenic, depending on your aural perspective. hope that we managed to touch a chord and not a nerve with most.

the next caustic lounge will take place on july 6th, same time and same place. but not the same set lists, because that would just be silly.

well, it was another groovy get-down at the caustic lounge and, as always, great to see everyone come out. [meaning come out for the night... i'm not outing anyone. your secrets are safe with me.] despite a late start, things stayed hoppin until well later than we had intended... in fact, i've noticed that every time we do this, the end time creeps slightly later. by the end of summer, one would assume this will be an all-night event.

dj kali & mr. dna @ kill me now 09.04.11

it was very nice to see so many friends out last night to tap their toes and shake their booties to the grooves. overall, the crowd who came [other than the ones we already knew] had tastes that ran decidedly on the safe side, so i think that we [especially me] were a little more guarded in our choices than usual. i'd also like to thank all those who were so friendly with me, since i was in an edgy, cranky mood and was pretty easy to set off. dom's set was pure gold, in my opinion, which is tricky when you draw the bullet and have to go first.

friday favourites 01.04.11

are you feeling ready for the weekend? has this week treated you well? has it been a great ride, or have you been struggling to see the spring flowers among the weeds? well, it's been a tumultuous and unbelievable week for me and while i think that the next few weeks are going to be pretty topsy-turvy, i'm happy to be able to share a bit of news that really made my week this week in friday favourites!

conversion 2- after hours :: ok, keep in mind that this is very preliminary, because we're still finalising everything for the first film, but we have a canadian partner who has expressed an interest in producing a sequel to conversion. (if you don't know what conversion is, go look at the blog!) needless to say, they would also be picking up the original conversion as well.

i'm only starting to work on some notes for the script, but dom and i have had some discussions with our distribution partner to get some broad details dealt with. basically, the story will follow seth and julia (looks like i may have to go blonde again) after their weird night out in the first conversion. while our two central characters may believe that they've left all those strange adventures behind them, it turns out that things aren't quite so easy and that, as a result of their having met some of those bizarre characters, they find themselves in the midst of a dangerous plot.

as you can probably tell, the angle for this story will be considerably higher-action and it will be more of an action-suspense-thriller than the original. along with seth and julia, the sequel will see the return of a few of the original conversion characters, such as irina, the eccentric woman who claimed to be in some kind of trouble and the two thugs from the parking garage. plus, of course, there will be a whole new cast of crazies to entertain and possibly intimidate.

this is way more than we had expected to get and dom and i are obviously over the moon at being able not just to garner some interest in our little project, but at being able (potentially) to follow it with something fast-paced, funny and with the potential- we think- for real box office appeal.

it may be a little early to start celebrating, but, seriously, after two years of working almost every single day on making our film, it's hard to keep from feeling like everything is finally coming together. more news, much more news, to follow

NOT MUCH CAN TOP THAT, BUT READ ON FOR A FEW MORE FRIDAY FAVOURITES AND YOUR WEEKLY CAT PIC!

you do know what day it is, right?

ok, seriously, even writing that top one was enough fun to qualify as a friday favourite, but, in case there was any doubt, there is not and there never will be a sequel to conversion in the works. we've finished up the exceptionally long and agonsing process of the sound mix on conversion and we're a few tweaks away from a complete, gift-wrapped, ready-to-watch film that will hopefully be making its debut in a theatre near you and, yes, there is a lot more news to follow soon, but that's all.

now, here are some real friday favourites:
de-3d glasses!

april fools' day at think geek:: every year, these guys come up with the most remarkable selection of imaginary toys for kids of all ages with two much imagination to begin with. this year's haul includes glasses that remove the world's distracting 3-d effect to make it more like watching a regular movie, a playmobil apple store and more...

the worst thing about this is that some of their incredible toys deserve to be real, but take heart!!! their "tauntaun sleeping bag" proved so incredibly popular with site visitors that they actually started manufacturing it. what will make the cut this year?

sephora pointe claire:: i mentioned this earlier in the week, but i wanted to give an extra word to the great staff at sephora in the fairview shopping centre. normally, you wouldn't see me use the words "fairview shopping centre" without the word "trapped" or "hostage", but the promise of goodies lured me there.

chocolate zombie bunny!
historically, my experiences with sephora stores haven't been great. they kind of remind me of those ads you see about home depot, where the lone customer wanders around the store desperately trying to find help. i guess that big business figured that women needed their equivalent experience.

but the folks at this store are just a fantastic balance of friendly and helpful without making you feel like you've been targeted for membership in some weird ufo cult. customer service is not dead.

arsenic-based sea monkeys!
march is over:: i hate march. i almost always have the worst month of my year in march and 2011 did nothing to break that trend. snowstorms, stalled job search, sound issues with the film, sickness... but that's all behind us now. because today, i'm just foolishly happy it's april and i'm once again ready to take on the world. in fact, i did just find a job posting for "dictator of earth" that i'm thinking for applying for... remarkably few qualifications required. i think i'm a good match.

a very happy april fools' day to everyone. i'm personally looking forward to a continuation of the milder weather we've been experiencing, a continuing improvement in my health (cold is still hanging on a little, but i'd say it's gone from a category 3 to a mild depression in the last few days) and to doing some writing work for the first time in forever. it looks like one of my stories will be appearing in the next issue of paraphilia magazine, assuming i can get my act together and get it edited on time! (you can see other short stories, as well as some music-related interviews i've done in past issues.)

i'm also looking forward to the fact that the coming week will bring two opportunities for me to dj: the first on wednesday night at cagibi (april 6th) and the second installment of "the caustic lounge" woth mr. dna. following that on saturday april 9th, i'll be doing a more dance-focused set at "kill me now" a classic goth night that takes place at cabaret playhouse. hope to see you montrealites there!

and finally, here's this week's cat photo, from the macdonald-marceau cat farm. it took our little princess a good couple of weeks to accept her new brothers, but, as you can see, the awkward stage seems to have passed.

friday favourites 04.03.11

it's march! spring is less than three weeks away! ech. who am i kidding? i got up wednesday morning and looked out into a snow squall and it was -13 celsius yesterday in montreal. [insert grumbling sounds here.] i'll be honest with you. this was not one of my favourite weeks of 2011 thus far. a plethora of intestinal troubles have led me to investigate whether or not i might have developed some level of intolerance to wheat and wheat by-products, so some dietary adjustments have been in order. one thing i've noticed: having to pay conscious attention to your diet all the time makes you think about almost nothing except food and if you're thinking about food, you're going to get hungry. and in my case, hungry for things that may end up making me sick. hurrah. i also got politely refused for consideration for a job because i had the exact sort of experience they were looking for. there is seriously no typo in that last sentence.and, to put it politely, i am finding a couple of aspects of artistic projects a little trying at the moment.plus, there is a long standing tradition in my life of crappy things happening to me in march. beware the idea and all that...

but this is the sort of week that friday favourites is supposed to be about. it's never more important to think about the things that make you just a little bit happy than when there seem to be a lot of things getting you down. so in that spirit... here's this week's friday favourites!

SEE MY FAVOURITES PLUS THIS WEEK'S CAT PIC- CLICK BELOW TO CONTINUE!

a different sort of dj set :: well, i already shared last week that i was looking forward to a first shot at a regular gig at cagibi and i'm happy to say that it's official! dj kali and mr. dna will be rocking the cat box (you'll get it in a few minutes) on the first wednesday of the month at "the caustic lounge", our little moniker for the night we're doing. one of the things that appeals to me about this gig in particular is that, unlike most of the other sets i get to do, this one is a lot more like when i used to do radio shows- there aren't really any expectations and it's more about what you want to hear and how you want to shape it into a coherent whole. there are some basic ground rules (don't make the people cry), but it's a very wide berth. i'm happy to have the opportunity to do gigs of different types and there is something intrinsically satisfying about being able to share something you love with friends and strangers.

mmmm... sin...
cider :: it's apple juice! it's alcohol! for crying out loud, what's not to love? ok, if this "gluten intolerant" thing turns out to have legs, alcohol of all sorts save wine, vodka and brandy are out. i guess that takes care of the classics, but i have a feeling that i'll still be nipping away for a pint from time to time. besides, if i'm "feeling no pain", i won't very well notice if i have a stomach ache, will i? huh?

specktra :: t's always nice to find a place where you can discuss something you like with others who share your interests. generally, that hasn't been a problem for me in terms of music, art, politics, etc. (it helps that a lot of people who share my tastes in one of those things are also interested in the others). as far as my "girly" interests, it's a little trickier, because there is the perception that women who are interested in beauty and fashion are always dimwits who couldn't possibly process a complex thought. and that's simply not so.

the cool thing about being part of specktra, the internet's largest beauty forum, is not merely that it's a place to get news and reviews of products and upcoming collections, but a place to talk to women (and a few gents) with a diversity of opinions on everything from all over the world.

my slightly paranoid world view tends to make me think of people being divided into two camps, with me and my friends on one side, while the other side is populated entirely by the cast of fox news and jersey shore. getting to talk to people from all over the world, from all races and age groups, all shapes and sizes, has a way of making you realise that things are a lot more complex and a lot more interesting than we like to assume.

camilla
moreover, despite the forum's impressive size, there is a remarkable sense of community. these people do not remain strangers unless it's by choice. if someone is having a bad spell, people sympathise and try to help. victories are celebrated. it's a nice reminder that people can be smart, civil, fun and different.

camilla :: a good friend bought her for dom and i in toronto. now how appropriate could that be? given my predilection for things macabre and things day of the dead, she's a pretty perfect fit. she's part of the ongoing series of living dead dolls, the much sought after friends from beyond the grave released in limited edition series. we'll definitely be giving her a good home. good friends who know who you really are always make my week better and every time i look at camilla (who sits, or stands, next to my desk where i can admire her) i'm reminded that i'm very blessed in that regard.

so that's this week's favourites. here's to next week being milder in all respects.

as far as news, i'm finally starting to figure out what the heck is going on is wisconsin, although i'm still not as well-informed as i'd like. at this point, so far, what i've learned is that the average teacher's salary is $51k per year (i'm not going to get into the value of benefits, not because they don't count, but because the value is always calculated by parties who have an interest in making it appear smaller or larger than it actually is) and people have a problem with this. seriously? i guess it doesn't look great compared to the average u.s. salary, which is in the high $30s, but that also includes everyone working who didn't need to attend college or university to get their jobs. isn't the reason why people do those things so that they can get higher-paying jobs? i guess the backlash is based on the fact that they only work nine months a year and that people have the perception that they only work the length of the school day. there's also the fact that the second you say the word "union" people get their backs up. (unions haven't done themselves any favours in this regard.) still, knowing what people in other fields earn, $51k doesn't seem excessively high for people who teach children. i'm making a point of learning more about this story, lest the teacher-hate spread outward in all directions.

i mentioned last week that we'd had our best month ever in terms of visits, because we would finish with over a thousand on the month. in fact, we finished with just over 1200- over 30% above our previous high water mark. so thanks everyone for your support!

finally, here's this weeks kitty pic. the model for today is simon, who is a tonkinese and our resident hunk. check out those eyes! (and, for those of you with fine attention to detail, check out seth pulling a photobomb in the background!)

friday favourites 25.02.11

oh yes, it's friday, which means you're looking down the barrel of another weekend, you lucky sods! whether your plans are world domination or catching up on sleep or teaching your pets to play checkers, let's all take a deep breath and think about those things that have brought a smile to our lips in the last week. here are a few of my choices:

hungry ballerina :: she eats, she travels, she stands on her toes. this blog is absolutely adorable; matter-of-fact in its writing, but an utter fantasy in content. i challenge you to read it and not salivate. her restaurant reviews from far and wide are a delectable parade from the imaginations of some of the world's great chefs and from unknown little nooks. she thoughtfully includes snapshots of the various dishes enjoyed at each feast, in case you weren't jealous enough already.

there's a wonderful simplicity to the posts; they are recaps of the atmosphere, service and food enjoyed in these various locations, without a lot of the heavy terminology normally employed by career food critics. and one of my favourite things about this blog is the sense of camaraderie one gets from each meal. these are shared experiences, with multiple appetizers, main courses and desserts. it is not merely one woman's experience enjoying great food, but one woman's perspective on an event involving friends sharing a gratifying experience.

plus, since we've all doubtless seen endless promos for the 75lb waifs in black swan, isn't kind of pleasant to think of a ballerina eating all this food?

the algebra of aristocracy :: i've only started reading posts from paul a. toth's blog, but if they're as fascinating and challenging as this mathematical proof of the fantasy of equitable wealth distribution, then it's going to be something i make time for over tea and biscuits, when my brain is relaxed.

at first glance, this was sort of intimidating to me, as it reminded me of a lot of times when the writer part of my brain tried desperately to understand the implications of a complex equation that looked like someone's fingers had gotten jammed in a typewriter. (google "typewriter" if you're not sure what that means.) but once i'd gotten over my bad memories of high school (or at least, managed to re-repress them), i was able to appreciate just how clever and compelling the piece is.

new rock :: i'll have to forgive them that questionable name, which makes it sound like the title of a kiss reunion album (let's not put that thought out there) and there are probably a lot of people who would say that a lady of my years has no business running around in a pair of massive black and silver heeled platform boots adorned with metal skulls (unless it's for the reunion we're not mentioning). to those people i say: pshaw.

my hefty new rocks are now on their third straight montreal winter and, while they aren't quite as shiny and new, they are still alive and (whenever necessary) kicking. it's hard to explain to someone who doesn't live in the vicinity of montreal exactly what it means to have a pair of boots that survive frequent, if not constant wear for three consecutive montreal winters. there are houses here that can't survive that.

i originally picked mine up at the new rock shop in camden market. this was not by chance, either. i'd seen what these boots looked like and i knew i'd get a kick out of owning them. i figured they'd be a lark and nothing more. when i found out the pricing, i was a little skeptical, but when i actually felt these babies in my hands and on my feet, i realised that these weren't just a joke brand for goths and aspiring bikers, but a pretty serious piece of foot equipment. these spaniards make 'em tough.

sadly, it has remained difficult to find new rocks anywhere in canada, which means that we're forced to order through the company's online store. what's worse, the las vegas-based north american distribution centre doesn't carry all the models, so there are some that you can only get from europe. assuming that you can even get them to ship here, imagine the fees for air freight on a pair of boots that weigh as much as a smart car.

but come hell or high water, i know that people around me are just going to have to get used to seeing me in boots that look like these, because i've been converted by a single pair into a loyal customer. the good thing is, i'll be able to walk through hell or high water to get them. now does someone want to explain to me how people in spain know how to make boots for a canadian winter?

global pet foods/ pitou minou :: on a previous friday favourites, i blogged about how thrilled i'd been to find a reliable vet. as with all parents, you want your kids to have the best and i'm very fortunate to live in proximity to the best when it comes to their regular needs.

global on queen mary is a dream, filled with everything your companion could need in food, snacks, sanitation, clothing and toys. with more stuff coming in every week and new products often being tested, it's difficult just to make a quick trip.

plus, of course, there's debra minding the shop, who seems to know every single product there backwards and forwards. she's able to give serious, factual advice on animal health and dietary needs and won't ever try to sell you something simply because it's more expensive. (in fact, she got us onto better quality food that costs less than what we were paying at another pet specialty store.) she can give advice on symptoms if you're not sure your little one needs a vet visit and she even keeps a very useful binder of people in the area offering services such as dog walking, pet-sitting, photography and grooming.

ironically, i was nervous about moving back to montreal because i had such a wonderful pet food store near me when i lived in toronto. as it turns out, it was another global franchisee and, in added irony, dom used to patronise their location in the west island. all are independently run, but our experiences so far have been that the stores are run by knowledgeable animal lovers who want to help. what more could a parent ask?

the anagram generator :: surely this doesn't require much of an explanation? a friend of mine posted an anagram of her name on facebook and while others laboured to come up with one of their own in response, i decided that my time was better spent googling "anagram generator" and seeing what i came up with. in fact, there are 8009 anagrams of my name (assuming you don't count the same words used in different order as separate entries). have fun giving new monikers to all your friends.

well, as you can see, this week has been spent largely in front of the computer. part of that is reflected here, on more like space, because this may in fact be a record month in terms of the number of posts i've made in a month (in february!). this is what happens when you have a lot of free time and it's cold outside. there are worse ways for me to be spending my time.

this week, i'll be keeping an eye on parallel developments in bahrain and libya, especially on the differences in reactions from the rest of the world to each country's pro-democratic uprisings. i don't expect that we're going to see another egypt in either country. that isn't to say that we won't see a change of government in either country, but it's not going to be like egypt.

closer to home, it's becoming uncomfortably clear that we're likely to have a spring election. shudder. after the root canal that has been canadian federal politics in the last five years, the only thing i want less than the current government is to be forced to the polls once again. i'm going to be spending some time sending love notes to opposition leaders in stephen harper's name in the hopes of avoiding another expensive debacle.

on a brighter note tomorrow (saturday the 26th) is nuit blanche in montreal! yes, we have ours in the middle of the winter, unlike all the other places that hold one, which is one more reason i'm happy to i have my tough and sturdy new rock boots to carry me through the night. although the temperature is scheduled to take a one day plunge for the festivities, i wouldn't miss my annual madcap date with art and insomnia for the world. this is something that i look forward to every year and this year, the organisers have even made it easier to enjoy with a truly phenomenal iphone app to help organise your night.

and yes... there are the oscars on sunday. the awards have always been predictable (marisa tomei aside), but the last few years have really redefined stultifying. this year, there is the added hurdle that they are airing in the wake of that other film awards show, where ricky gervais decided to show the world his own pair of golden globes. i'll be watching this year solely as an observer of fashion.

and finally, for those of you in the montreal area, don't forget that this wednesday will be the debut of the caustic lounge- dj kali and mr. dna at cagibi (9 'til midnight). hope to see you there!

i'd also like to thank everyone who's taken the time to follow this blog and who's stopped by to peruse the postings. it is much appreciated. i mentioned earlier that this has been the busiest month i've had in terms of blog posts, but it's also been the busiest month for visits, eclipsing our previous high water mark of last november. although it's a short month, this is the first time the blog has passed a thousand visitors in a month (which doesn't even count all you folks who read it on facebook)! i really enjoy doing this and it's nice to know that there are some people out there who enjoy reading.

have a great week and remember to take a lesson from seth: always make room for intense relaxation.

music to our ears

as promised, i have an update on a couple of fronts:
dj kali + mr. dna

1. mr. dna's playlist from the queer post-punk night on thursday is now on line.

2. after appearances at various haunts around montreal, it looks like dj kali & mr. dna have found a longer-term home at cagibi. starting on wednesday march 2nd, we'll be filling your ears with prescription-strength aural goodness from 9 until midnight and we'll be there on the first wednesday of every month from there on in, assuming all goes well and we don't wreck the place.

given the venue, this isn't a "dance" event (we'll still be doing those from time to time as well), which gives us a lot of latitude in terms of what can be played, so expect some inclusions from previous play lists and a lot of things from the depths of our music collections that don't get to meet strangers often enough.

mark your musical calendars and we'll see you for "the caustic lounge" at cagibi on the 2nd!

friday favourites 18.02.11

that's right! it's time for another edition of friday favourites, a time to appreciate the passing of another week and the things that have made it better. here's a few of the things that made it better for me:

the young turks :: sometimes, you don't want to go through the laborious process of explaining to someone why they're in the wrong. sometimes, arguments are just so facile that they don't deserve the dignity of an intelligent and well-crafted response. in those times, what you really want is to just point out the giant sinkholes in an argument and let the stupidity sing for itself. feel good people, because the young turks are there for you.

the award winning podcast and youtube channel have actually landed its host a regular gig on msnbc (i'm betting msnbc would love to get the viewership tyt get). it's a straight-up dismantling of the likes of fox news and the tea party, with a healthy smattering of commentary on those news stories that make those of us with brain cells occasionally beat our heads on tabletops. rather than refuting arguments through careful study and analysis, the hosts simply use common sense and caustic wit to draw attention to the predominance of general idiocy and speak for those who are supremely fed up with having to go through the motions of intelligent debate with people who think their great-grandfather kept pterodactyls as pets.

(i'd also like to thank them for helping me manage my shameful and growing addiction to watching clips of glenn beck on the internet. which is why i'm embedding a clip that's 18 months old, rather than a newer one...)

hey, if they ever need a token white chick to join their ranks, i am all over that.

it's raining men :: dear god, not the song. the new shower gel from lush, the pioneers of handmade cosmetics (meaning, cosmetics that look like colourful lumps of stuff). it's loaded with honey which, if you can separate it from its normally sticky texture, is actually wonderful for your skin and for basically every part of you. the company web site describes it as having a toffee scent, but i'd actually compare it more to spiced honey (meaning, i don't notice the buttery smell i would normally associate with toffee, in case you're wondering). it's actually the only shower gel i'll use as a shampoo as well, since, like i said, honey is good for everything, including my unruly mop. (it doesn't lather much on hair, but that's actually good- more lather means more soap, which basically sucks the moisture out of whatever it touches.) i have had to spend way too many hours adjacent unwashed armpits encased in clothing that has never seen clean water. i want to start the day with a scent that makes me happy and leaves me feeling clean. that is all.

gingerbread spice cake, after consumer testing
baking :: every winter i promise myself i'm going to do this and every winter, i seem to find myself bogged down with other things. i hadn't given myself time to rediscover the simple pleasures of baking in almost two years, since i went on sort of a tear and ended up accidentally making pumpkin pound cake for fifty when i thought the recipe sounded small. (pro tip: pound cake recipes are not small. pound cakes are small. most recipes are designed to make 2 or 3 cakes.) so this week, i faced my fear of flour (to clumsy people like i, flour is kind of like the bogey man- seems harmless to others, but you try to face it and suddenly, it's everywhere) and baked. i started with my personal standby, gingerbread spice cake. this is something that stemmed from my love of everything that goes into fruitcake except the fruit. i just wanted to strip it down to its original elements. i followed this quickly with my first ever attempt at a coffee cake. (i topped it with dollops of cream cheese for extra health value!) what i discovered was that baking is actually a lot less stressful than any other kind of cooking, in the same way that chemistry is a lot less stressful than other sciences. unless you do something wrong. as long as you follow the magical list of elements in the proper proportions, you're going to end up with a cake. you might want to tweak the flavours, but it's not like making a souffle, where you're running bets with everyone else in your house on whether or not it will be transformed into quiche. besides, there's something just blissful to being in a house filled with the smells of fresh baked goods. i wish i could link that.

dj'ing :: thanks to the awesome organisers of kill me now and the queer post-punk night, both held at cabaret playhouse, i've had the opportunity to makes some noise a couple of times in the last few weeks. i'd previously been mourning the loss of burning mondays, the former home of the gloomy eclectic at katacombes show bar. that was months ago and unfortunately the last couple of dj gigs i was supposed to have didn't pan out. so it's been a great relief to me to be able to get behind the wheels of steel polymer plastic and see what i can throw together. my most recent playlist is directly below this post and if you'd like to see more, you can. as i promised earlier today, expect some news on the future of dj kali and mr. dna in the very near future.

so that's my round-up for this week. all in all, it was fairly uneventful, although that could be because i ended up spending a large number of daylight hours in bed and a large number of nighttime hours bouncing off the walls. i think it seemed particularly uneventful because a certain partner in basically everything finished half life 2 earlier this week, which left me unable to play backseat driver. last week, i could have told you what was happening at any given time by referencing whether it occurred during antlion breeding season or in the old prison.

this week, it seems like i'll have a plethora of revolutions-in-waiting to watch. at the moment, i can't say that i know enough about any of them to discuss rationally, so perhaps this week will be prying myself out of my north american rut and trying to learn something about the countries that are chafing against their restraints in the wake of egypt's incredible achievement. if we're going to have a repeat performance, i think it will require a) a large middle class, particularly one that has been disenfranchised by recent world economic events and b) a tech-savvy younger generation (often the children of said middle class) who combine the passions of youth with the possibilities of technology.

one developing story that i will be keeping an eye on is the imminent triple threat match of apple v. google v. publishers in the world of subscriber content. apple has said that they want a 30% cut of content sold through their approved apps. google has countered with one pass, whereby they would take a 10% cut. the difference, if you're in marketing or financial analysis, is that with google, you're paying 10% and hoping that they recruit a substantial audience. with apple, you're paying 30% to gain access to a market that already exists. either way, the publishers are in a predicament. they've made it clear that they don't accept either offer, but the fact is that they're going to have to bite the bullet sooner or later, because while they're arguing, the world of telecommunications consumers are falling deeper in love with their apps. (i don't blame them. sure, you can access the internet online, but mobile browsers can be fidgety on any system and god help you if you have to deal with a flash-based site. apps are designed to streamline your user experience and make it easier- often easier than accessing the site in the first place. who's gonna have a problem with that?) the interesting thing about this match is that you're basically dealing with three heels- apple with their usurious 30%, google with its spurious 10% of nothing and big publishers, who are only protesting so that they can justify raising prices to their customers later on. bravo.
the crtc, not exactly as pictured

i'll also be keeping an eye on the strangely unavailable (at the moment) crtc web site for further information on how i can respectfully request that they blow their decision in favour of metered, corporate-driven internet service out their collective grey, flaccid ass.

in order not to leave you with that image and by way of apology for posting this so late, here's this week's kitteh picture, featuring julia, the little princess of the house. have a great week to come and remember to enjoy whatever little pleasures you find.

EDIT :: LAST MINUTE ADDITION!!!

ok, i'm a monster. i really don't like kids (except tava). i've tried, i understand that they're necessary, but the fact is that i didn't even like kids when i was one and the situation hasn't gotten better. so this just makes me smile.

dj kali @ queer post-punk 17.02.11

last night was sort of a barrel of unpredictability in many ways. it was really interesting seeing what people danced to, which was a combination of the extremely familiar and the surprisingly obscure. i ended up doing a lot longer than i'd ever intended, but it gave me the opportunity to do some things i hadn't tried before. many thanks to dj cry betty for organising the night, dj tyg for an awesome opening set, cabaret playhouse for having us, everyone who showed up and, of course, to mr. dna, who jumped in last minute to fill a void in the schedule. we'll have to do this again soon!

dj kali @ katacombes 26.08.11

oops. my bad. this may be the first time in years i've done this, but i completely forgot, or at least neglected, to write down any of my play list from last thursday. it was sort of doomed from the outset, since i left the house without paper or pen. normally, i'd just record the set on my phone, but since i lost my phone earlier in the week, i couldn't do that either.

there was, of course, music from a lot of the usual suspects- see my precious play lists for details- as well as some additional extended fun, since the set was a full four hours rather than the customary two. and it was all the more fun because of the raunchy and ribald videos supplied by mr. dna. in fact, i've rarely felt as free to play what i wanted.

for those who were there, thanks very much, your presence is always appreciated. for those who couldn't make it, well, uh... i guess you'll never know what you missed...

dj kali @ spooky boogie night 2010.07.04

a new twist to the djkali experience this time : video projections courtesy of mr. dna (& the "extra weird sampler"- some of the strangest movie trailers ever made). that proved enough of a hit that we'll be repeating the experience in the future. and speaking of the future, for the next couple of months, that's going to mean the first sunday of the month at katacombes, as part of the black cauldron/ spooky boogie nights love-in.

anyway, here's a listing of what was heard last night and, once again, a big thanks to all who showed up, listened, watched, quaffed and laughed. it was definitely one of my favourite dj experiences.

dj kali @ spooky boogie night 2010.06.13

so the burning monday crew has returned to the katacombes, only now it's on sunday, because mondays are, like, so three months ago. so this is the micro-set that marked my personal return to the wheels of steel (more like the wheels of polyethylene compound, but anyway).

implog :: she creatures

sleep chamber :: snakebite
the klinik :: moving hands
skinny puppy :: falling
severed heads :: now an explosive new movie
imminent :: garn
mika vainio :: goths

absolute body control :: i wasn't there
joy division :: atrocity exhibition
blank dogs :: tin birds
devo :: fresh
killing joke :: follow the leaders
the damned :: lively arts

[ok, you may have noticed that the ending to this was a little off. i was a bit pressed for time and ended up taking ff in a hurry with only about half the cd's i normally take and, yes, the novy svet album where my closing track is found was one of those left behind. everyone was confused and unsettled, there was pandemonium. dammit, you should never leave your soldiers behind! haven't i learned that yet?]
